3200 Gearbox Oil

I've been reading conflicting information about which oil to use the the 3200 manual gearbox. There has been a debate in the other forum about a misprint in the service manual too.

I have everything needed apart from the gearbox oil to carry out a very thorough service and want to get this bit right.

The two oils are;

SAE 80 and an ATF fluid spec to Dexron II. The service manual and Meridian say the latter, but the other forum says its wrong!

To top this the BMW M5 bods use another oil....

Which one do I use???!

I've been told not to use ATF in the manual gearbox. I instead use 75W-90 Shell Racing or Fuchs Titan Race SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic.

The Selenia Racing sticker under the bonnet also confirms that the manual gearbox should have Tutela Gemax 6, not ATF.

Incidentally (as you refer to) the Maserati service manual has an error as it quotes ATF as recommended for 3200GT manual . I have however used ATF and fully synthetic 75/90 in mine . Both had no issues , but the ATF improved the 'notchiness' in 1st and 2 gear from cold .

I spent a long long time looking into this for the gearbox in my Beemer. BMW will sell you an expensive fluid called MTF-LT-1 for this box. As I understood it this is basically a ATF with some extra additives. Some M owners used royal purple and various others. From what I read everyone had an opinion and no one had a failure. If the box is the same, perhaps the BMW fluid would be an option...

Those old Getrag boxes are bullet proof,normal ATF is just fine and makes gear changing a little more user friendly when Its warming up..

I've always used ZX1 Extralube in engines and gearboxes since the racing days,It does seem to work.

Since doseing the old Getrag a couple of years ago,it definatly feels less agricultural..

Thanks for all the replys. I haven't seen this discussed in length before. It's interesting to read that you'll be going back to an atf fluid. Looking at the bummer forums there are a lot of opinions and nothing gives specifics about which to use. The issue for me is that the factory fluid isn't made any more and I need to use an alternative...

Oddly I have just been to check the box with all the fluids in and they have given me This for the differential;

Which I find very confusing and wonder if this is incorrect?

Regarding the oil for a 3200 with the mutiplate diff,you can't just use any old diff oil as the plates will wear,thats if there not worn out already...Then there's the incorrectly factory set crown wheel and pinion backlash problem!

I think you will find that the alternative is Tutela Car Matryx 75- 85 gearbox oil.

Hi Dave,

can you tell me more about that?

I am interested in this too: I have what has been said as drive train shunt, and tbh I've not believed this but accepted it as the norm. If what you are saying is the issue then perhaps I may be able to cure this; it is very annoying....and would improve the drivability further.

The drive train shunt noise "clacking"you hear when changing gear is caused by incorrect shimming of the crownwheel and pinion in the Diff housing... Geoff at Shiltech says most new 3200's came out of the factory set like this..
Were currantly working on a cure..

The 4200's also suffered,the then factory solution was to wrap the whole rear gearbox assembly in a thick soundproof cladding.. dont ask!

I'm very keen to see what you come up with as a fix on this.

You have to love the italian solutions....

Al ,

I have Tutela Matryx in the diff , looked same as that bottle , I think all matryx is 75/85 . Regarding the ATF fluid , I didn't notice any real difference at all when warm and moving - the getrag boxes are quite "positve feel" anyway !
It was only that from cold the ATF was a little easier for the first few changes .

This is remarkable, because i was wondering allready why my second gearbox (very low milage) was just as noisy as the old one.
There seems to be too much play between crown and pinion, as well as a pinion bearing preload that is too low.
There allways is a certain amount of whining in these boxes and i am wondering if the factory followed its own specìfications precisely enough, while assembling theire boxes.
