Bad noise at startup

This weekend I've developed an awful noise when the engine starts. It lasts less than 5 seconds and is coming from the front near side. First I thought the oil level was low as it sounds like bearing has been starved, but no the oil is fine. Any ideas?

Is it tappets Klive? Sounds like a bag of spanners for a few seconds and then goes?

Nope not tappets. I'm thinking water pump at the moment. It's a really loud bearing noise and quickly fades to nothing.

Yes that's another possibility. Probably less expensive than the water pump. Although I tried to start with the air con off and it didn't make any difference.

it doesn't happen if I've just switched off, it's only comes back if the engine has been off for 5 mins or so which brings me back to oil starvation!

Could it be the same problem listed by another member...Oil Variaitors? Holds the oil pressure so you don't start up without oil at the top of the engine

Do you have all your heating on Klive? Maybe try turning it off and see whether that makes a difference? Loading the alternator?

If it is a rapid knocking noise, it could be the Oil Feed Pipe, that comes from the bottom right of the engine, then up the back by the bulhead, these are notorious for breaking down internally and causing a knocking noise on start-up. Alternatively it could be Variator noise, one at the front of each bank. These are fed by oil held under pressure in a tank situated in the centre of the "V" "Accumulator", if this loses gas pressure then there is no pressure to push the oil to each variator on start-up, until normal pressure from the engine get's there. Get someone to start the engine from cold while you are under the bonnet, see if you can locate the noise..!!
