Capitalism or fraud?

Edit: My son daughter-in-law took their Seat to a major high street service centre (not Halfords) for a quoted £200 service and MOT which they said would be completed this morning. Having heard nothing by lunchtime my son asked for an update on the collection time and the conversation then got interesting.

The service was still not complete "We need more time - a couple of hours or so."
MOT fail only for worn front brake pads.

He asked if there were any advisories, and was then given a list of work that must be done:
1 tyre looks a bit perished so all 4 are to be replaced.
1 Shock Absorber misted, so all 4 are to be replaced.
As the front pads are worn, the front discs must be replaced as well "and the rears don't look too healthy either".

The explanation he was given for additional work was a combination of 'company policy', 'legal requirement', and of course utter bovine faeces.

He was then told that the additional work had been priced up, all parts confirmed as available, and "We will finish it today if you just give us the go ahead."

The price?
Just £1,960

After a brief and interesting 'discussion' my lad told them to finish the service and give him back the car with the MOT Fail, and he said "it will now be booked in to another MOT centre".

A few minutes later someone phoned him from the service centre to apologise for the 'mix up' when their enthusiastic mechanic listed so much more work than was actually required and he might have given my lad the wrong impression about the way they do business; they will be pleased to change the brake pads and finish the service for another £120 and the car will then be 'good to go'.

Now, one might expect a bit of heft on a Maserati bill and for good reason, but an uplift from £200 to £1,960 on a Seat? I wonder how many folk have had their wallets lightened by that crowd of shysters; to protect the forum I won't name them, but it makes my blood boil that they think it's ok con people - and other folk will no doubt have fallen for it

Rant over, time for me to clean a Maserati :):):)

Sadly, I think all dealers and service centres are under pressure to 'up sell' that's 'rip off' to you and me. I always go to small grimy garages, where you can speak to the person involved. Seems to work for me.

That's terrible! I had similar with my old Alfa 166, needed MOT urgently so took to only place open (was Xmas) - went to collect and he's just smirking to himself listing out all the things it will need - inc exhaust and steering rack - £3200 - Kerr-ching! Of course I'd looked after that car as I've done with them all apart from a Renault 19 I had - hated that car. I just told him he was taking shiite and I'm on AROC etc, I know worn rack when I drive a car and basically told him to eff off. Took to my normal guy when he got back and £300 all in inc. service.

The MOT is an industry for sure. Best I've come across is Norway and Sweden. You get your car MOT at the government test station. They have no commercial interest in selling or fixing anything.
The worst that can happen is a dangerous fail where you get the garage of your choice to tow away.
They are however frighteningly dispassionate and clinical about it all!
Having said that I once got a fail (minor) for the spring on my tow socket cover having failed!

Same here in France for the CT and I find it a totally honest appraisal.
Support your local independent garage for your normal average cars and a Specialist for your highly strung ones.
Just check Google reviews first if you don't feel happy.
If your not happy leave a review.

Like that in Ireland, massive shed, they drive it in one end, ramp it, do the business, drive it out the other end and tell you it failed.

All government run - no vested interest as they are in NI too.

I know of a local garage who told there MOT testers to fail 1 in 3 for rusty brake pipes,as people assume it serious do not question it or check...sadly all to common

Exactly they get a lot of stick here but it seems so much better than the UK system

To be fair when I was MOT testing in the UK saw some horrendous brake pipes and they do fail even on the MOT ramp leaving a mess for me to clean up for a £35 test back in 2014.
When you see people have put grease on them you usually know they are bad.
If it fails on the road a lot of people will have an accident.

I've never had any bother, always fair, and have been given options. If that had been me I would have taken time out to report them, mix up or not, before the next person isn't so lucky.

Never had a single issue with an MOT test. Whether pass or fail they’ve always been correct.
My experience also. And strangely I use local Halfords for MOT. I think much depends on the people in the garage as much as 'corporate directive'

Ditto. In fact last one I took the MTWND (Micra that WILL NOT DIE) (1) for F1 replaced the side light for cost so it passed.

C
(1) It now has an oil leak that I am studiously ignoring in the hope that it will!

+1

I know people who would pay in the belief that they needed to / were driving a dangerous car.

bugger me that's outrageous, I've heard of this type of thing many a time but not to this degree, you should of have taken them to task, should of done the pads FOC especially as they were rumbled and could of been quite a serious matter if formal complaint lodged with MD
