Early 4200 Rear Wheel Bearings

Folks, knowledgeable advice requested: I have found to my cost that the rear wheel bearings for early (2002) 4200s are different from later versions in that the resistance of the ABS sensor is 1.4 ohms whereas later in that year it changed to 1.7 ohms. If you fit a later bearing although it works as a bearing, you get ABS and other warning lights. (Part number for the correct bearing is 185564). However, can anyone who genuinely knows or has done it themselves please tell me if you can convert a later bearing by swapping over the ABS sensor ring (or is the other part of the ABS that is fixed on the bearing different)?

I had the same trouble, they went by the colour of the wire to the sensor, blue or black but it turned out you need to use the chassis number only, don't think you can convert but stand to be corrected

Put a 7.87 Ohm resistor across the wires. That will bring the 1.7 Ohms down to 1.4 Ohms.

You need 7.933 Ohms really, but that's not a standard. The 7.87 is, and should be plenty close enough, at 1.398 Ohms.

drewf you're thinking like a champ buddy! Exactly how I would have thought about this issue!

Have you tried this? I hate to cast doubt, but the sensor is inductive, so it will be a much higher impedance in use, and you resistor will load the output quite a bit. So while it might work the signal levels will be reduced. Personally I think I would like to see the output on a scope make sure it looks ok?

Nope, but for the 2p a resistor will cost, I'd try it to correct the 'wrong' installation before looking for more complex solutions.

Can I suggest if going down the resistor route that some kind of positive test is carried out? I feel it would be 'bad' if the resistor stopped the warning light, but also meant the ABS failed to function correctly?

Speak to Duncan at AlfaNat in Bristol he has a car in with the same issue.
Thanks Matt - it is my car that Duncan is dealing with. He tells me the bearing is now in and someone got a discount for him - was it you?
As for the resistor route, I guess that could be fried with the later version of the bearing that I have - the next time a bearing knackers out.
Many thanks to all of you.
