Fifth Gear

Haven't seen the fifth gear review but I have it recording tomorrow.

Benny has driven the car and says its very good for what it is and he is not one to mince his words.

The Ghibli is a brave move and is ripe for taking a kicking but I think we all have to remember what this car is.

Its a bit of a Eurobox aimed at sales to increase funds for Maserati so they can then reinvest this into models that we want....remember the Alfieri?

I have little respect for fifth gear its a second rate programe presented by has beens.

I think we should get behind the Ghibli and not kick it down and put prospective purchasers off.

Indeed the car is not aimed at us really. It's nice that it exists but Maserati have missed an open goal with poor rear leg space and only offering a single turbo on the diesel.

As for supporting the brand, we all are and I doubt that many purchasers would be interested in forums. When I had my DMS 535d - great piece of kit - it was not something that had much forum input.

I just hope it pumps cash into the coffers for Fiat so they are happy for Maserati to continue and create exciting cars.

Surely you can't be serious?

Maybe the best comedy ever made.

<fx:clears throat, stand up, adopts portentious pose, and in a deep voice, proclaims>
Yes, I am serious, and don't call me Shirley
<fx: Bows and sits down to rapturous applause>

Seems not many of us are reps who burn up the miles with our jobs, but if I was, I would be thinking I could have a Maserati instead of a Beemer or the-like, which image wise cuts a few shapes in the company car park amongst the sea of look-a-like Euroboxes.

And in terms of rear leg room, well the wife has her runabout to take the 2 kids and their paraphernalia around during the week (be honest when do you ever have 2x six-footers in the back of your car), but when they come out with Dad at the weekends there's plenty of room for them in Daddy's MASERATI!! The Maserati would again stand out against the other Dad's cars at the boys football ground.

I really think it will have a market.

I sat in the back of the Ghibli and the rear leg room was adequate. My only real gripe is some of the plastics were cheap to touch and the boot lid is very tinny, but the boot itself is "mahooosive"

You could say its a seven seater, well, 5 and 2 in the boot.

I think this is a realistic and honest review.

I agree. I am no expert, but Let's face it, a huge part of the sales is down to the name of the product when it comes to Maserati. If this doesn't sell, it will increase their losses and damage their reputation.....perhaps they will have sorted a marketable version of the Alfieri by then to redeem themselves.

My 2p....
commens on here will have little if any influence on who buys this car. It is aimed at the company car bracket not the private purchaser. Most larg companies offer a range of cars for their staff and select this range on the benefits each car brings to the company. If it fails this hurdle it will not make it onto the companies fleets.

Maserat have done this to survive...just like the biturbo in the De Thomaso days so it is not their first departure from their historic brand. At least this time the car is on par with most in the construction aspects...it will be down to this car as to whether the brand survies as it is today.

As for investing in other models with the money from this...well the first place will be the banks and share holders...once they are sorted anything else will be spent updating current models and developing the GT replacement...any halo model will take a back seat until the GT and 4X4 are selling well

Boot does have a pull release from inside!

The main issue I found was getting my feet into the rear footwell as the space behind the B pillar was tight. Room was acceptable once my feet were in

Good revue and honest..!! Petrol V6 does look and sound quite good, a bit tight in the back but so are a lot of others that size..!!

I've driven it for a good few hours and I will say it as it is.
Cashing in on the badge with a mass produced car made in a new factory using a platform and engine that can't compete. End of.

Unfortunately, they've produced a car that if it had a less evocative badge, would have had quite likely even worse reviews. You get the impression that nearly every reviewer wanted to enthuse about it, but found it difficult when, despite it being a brand new design, it wasn't a class leader in any important area of performance, torque, mpg, handling, interior space, interior quality, monthly lease costs or anywhere else.
As for Fifth Gear, they are about as fair-minded and balanced set of presenters as you'll find ( and I talk from experience having had my own much maligned Rover 75 tested and filmed by them).Certainly far far better than the cheap jibe filled "entertainers" on Top Gear.

The problem is even if it was the GT being unveiled with this Ghibli diesel engine in I don't think it would enthuse any more. It's not the aesthetics per se which let it down it's the wooly handling and mediocre diesel lump! You can't polish a turd!
