GranSport exhaust mods - picture heavy thread

My gransport had fitted sport back boxes which i have been advised are essentially straight through pipes. It sounds fantastic great deep sound and lots of pops and crackles on the over run. Its quite loud as it is, im wondering what would the effect be of removing the centre silencer and just having an x pipe. Will it be way over the top? Or will it enhance it further. This is not an everyday car so i can deal with (a little) louder. Anyone have a similar setup? As mentioned back boxes are essentially straight through at the moment so no valves etc.

Stefano,
The sports rear boxes may well still be valved which operate with the sports button. Do you know what make..?? Mine has a full Larini Sports system, which is back boxes, X-Pipe and 200 Cell Cats, plus the connecting pipes. The sound is glorious and if you have valved back boxes you can tone it down a bit, for hospitals etc..!! It depends how loud you want to go, I can be heard about a mile away, maybe more on a clear day..!! The 200 Cell Sports Cats will improve performance over standard and the X-Pipe will enhance the bangs and pops on overun..!! If done properly you should not get a cabin drone..!!
Cheers

Mine 100% has no valves as in the service history Bill McGrath have written about disabling it etc as not applicable with the rear boxes. So if i go x pipe im guessing i cant drive to hospitals etc!!!

It depends how far you want to go, personally I would release a bit of power by going Sport Cats first, then see how loud that is, before going to X-Pipe..!!

Am i right in think the x pipe will be much cheaper? I will be fitting so excluding any labour costs....

Stefan, we can get one to you for £220 all in, delivered (UK). With straight through rears, an X-pipe and standard cats you will get a very nice sound that is noticeably louder than just the rears. Pm Tinman and ask him about his experiences as that is what we did to his. If you want a chat, pm me a contact number and I'll call you.

Awesome will get some feedback. Thing is i have no idea what rears are on the car but it sounds like no other gransport ive heard with just back box changes. Can i email you a video to get your opinion? Im concerned with x pipe it will be insanely loud (although part of me wants that! Haha)

Stefano I've been going through the same thought process of late - I want a nice deep bassie sound, without it being too LOUD.

I have the Larini rears at present and I removed the secondary cats, and have been toying with getting an X-pipe, although now thinking more of the H-pipe which I believe will be a little less aggressive.

Benny kindly offered to chat to me about it which I haven't taken him up on yet - I may do in time.

The current set up is quite loud but does sound gorgeous. I am intrigued as to how it might improve/change with an H-pipe - one day I may take the plunge and do it, as I can always stick the resonator back on and sell the H-pipe if its too much for me.

Will be interested to see which route you take.

How easy/expensive is it to remove secondary cats? I think i may take the plunge and go for the x pipe. I can always change it back if it is too loud. Is there any cutting involved or anything like that? i.e can i switch back to the resonator if necessary?

Th X-pipe is a straight swap for the resonator which can be put back at any time. The X-pipe will enhance the sound rather than transform it. Trust me, it won't be too loud.

Simon, have a listen to mine at some point. I have Larini sports cats, Larini H-pipe and Larini valved rear boxes. The sound is quite deep and is awesome - it certainly drew the punters in at Brunty last weekend! A couple of vids to give you an idea....

Simon, it depends on whether you have got valved rears; if you have then go for an X/H-pipe as you do have a volume control. If not, then I would seriously think about it as it could be a bit too much for your neighbours on a daily basis. Removing the resonator with the mods you already have will really unleash the beast.

Im guessing removing Cats AND having an X pipe AND having sport boxes is too much? So just to confirm Benny, my neighbours wont hate me even more with an X pipe :p (Since Cats are still in place). Could i get that in writing haha.

If you can close the valves with the sport button you will be fine, I do that when I want stealth mode, otherwise she breathes like a fire dragon with valves open..!!

OK, sorry, there are two members asking the same question..!! No valves as I said before, you can change the 600 cell cats for 200 cell sport cats, this will give better breathing and a bit more noise, or change to H-Pipe and get more noise, or X-Pipe and get more noise and bangs / pops on overun..!! If you do everything with no way to shut the noise down if required, you will love it but others may not..??

Thanks for posting these Mark - have listened to these clips several times and your car sounds amazing!

So is my thinking right that the H-pipe is not as loud as the X-pipe? But it still adds some depth/bass to the overall sound?

I had the secondary cats removed but to be honest it didn't make much difference - it was by changing to Larini rear boxes that I found some decent sound. These are not valved so I have the sound all the time, so my concern is with an H-pipe will it become silly loud on start up and when leaving the house. Am so tempted though to try an H-pipe...

Did you not also change your manifold as well I thought I remember having read?

I'm sure your car sounds even better in the flesh as when I met you at Ace earlier this year you hadn't changed the exhaust at that point.

Robert do you have the Larini H or X pipe? What was the reason for your choice over the other (either H or X)?
