Hi I have a 2005 Gransport and it has developed a problem with the power windows, first when i had been out in it they did not auto drop when the door was opened, i reset the battery isolater which dropped both windows to the position when the door is opened but neither window will go up or down even using the switches i have checked the fuses which are ok.

Have you heard of anything like this or do you know of any specialist that i could take it to.i am based in Milton Keynes

You may have an issue with the power windows control unit. Did you check the passengers footwell for moisture?

There's a micro switch which can cause problems on the window drop, initiated by the door handle being lifted.

From MK, Bill McGrath's have to be worth a call, they're in Kimpton, just off J10 of the M1 (basically behing Luton Airport). Paul, the chap who looks after the GSs there will almost certainly know how to sort it.

I have had problems with both the contact switch in the window mechanism and also the window motor, which i have replaced. I also used window motors from the 4200 in my 2001 3200 which with some modification fit ok and seem much stronger. I also have a vague memory during all of this that there is more than one fuse that affect the windows. There is one that is the fuse for normal operation and a different fuse for the door opening widow drop trick, so be careful which fuses you have checked, if you look through the fuse descriptions in the owners handbook, you will see multiple references.

is there not a "reset" you can try?
its usually push Both window down switches at once untill the windows open completely, keeping the3 buttons pushed down hold it there for 10 seconds then release and push both up buttons keeping the buttons pressed once again for 10 seconds after both windows close. then release and it "Might" of reset back to standard settings..

Hi all, just had a very similar issue tonight in the rain! Just got the car so i will have it checked under warranty, but essentially if the car is running all things work perfectly. As soon as i take the key out, if i open either door, i hear a series of strange noises and then the window drops down reluctantly in a couple of movements. When i close the door, nothing happens. They stay open! Ive had to stick it in the garage for the night as it will not go up unless im in the car with engine running. Any ideas all??

To add, engine MUST be running. If ignition is on, the window controls do nothing at all. Its like they have no power....

If it was the battery wouldn't the volt meter be down and the car struggle to turn over? As mentioned it all works fine once car is running. Very strange indeed! I will check for dampness in footwells tonight. Although i have to say i did notice condensation on the inside of the car.

These cars are notoriously sensitive to battery voltage. In theory I'd agree with you, but I've seen so many apparently illogical issues solved by a new battery.

If you're getting condensation, a couple of things would be worth checking quite urgently :)

1) The aricon drain hose. It lest water drain from the blower fan housing out of the bottom of the car. When (not if) it gets blocked, the blower box fills with water and drips onto the conveniently located fuse box. Want to take a guess where the window lifting ECU is?

Has a good show of how to clean everything out (thanks Matt)

2) The heater matrix located behind the NIT control leaks. That puts coolant in the floor well. It *also* drips over the expensive gear behind the NIC. New from Maserati they are about £1000. It's the same part as the Alfa 166 which I got for £50~ including next day delivery. It's still £500 to get the dash out though.

Hope this is useful

I will try a battery reset tonight as a first call. If the windows didn't work at all i would agree with you and potential water ingress affecting the control unit. But since it works faultlessly when engine running, it leads me to believe maybe it is voltage crazyness.

Never seen one fail totally, but quite common to get odd behaviour. Deffo worth checking the simple stuff first :)

Catman,

My car does the same on the drivers side. It's intermittent and only seems to happen if I've been on a few 'in town drives'.

The window always drops it's inch or so when opening the door. Some times it raises whilst the door is open, so I have to pull on the handle again to make it dip again. Then sometimes when you shut the door it takes about 10-20 seconds for it to raise. If you are getting in the car and turn the engine on it raises straight away. Strange.

This must have a link in some way with the battery voltage??

What I do know is that after a good run out at cruising speed, the window works perfectly. It also works fine with normal raise and lowering.

Adrian.

When you say a series of strange noises, are they coming from the passenger footwell? Could be relay(s) starting to give up, which could be moisture related.

Nope. The noises are coming from inside the door so the window mechanism. As mentioned it happens on both doors and only when key is out. Its unlikely these have failed as they work perfect once car is running. The more i think about it the more it sounds like battery....

That does rather sounds like voltage issues which may well tie in with Miles' observations about relays. Would be worth checking the footwell for damp and then getting in there while someone operates the windows to see / listen to the relays.

Of course it may also be worth just lubing the mechanism as a first step....

Right, did a battery reset but unfortunately no joy. Car has been in the pouring rain all day and both footwells are dry. Its so strange. Noise is definitely from inside the doors.... Ive worked out a nack however to get it to closed. I have to literally jump out the car and close the door within 5 seconds of taking the key out and then it works. Any longer it stays open. When unlocking the car, the window doesnt drop at all. Just have to pull it open. Start the car up and everything works as it should. Im stumped!
