Thanks for trying but chrome is the only option for me. Would any on the list be interested in stainless steel bolts though? I have a chap that quoted me for 10 but i seem to remember the set up costs for 10 made the expensive but if there are lots to do the cost goes way down! Thoughts?

Thought I'd seen slip on "chromed plastic" ones in the right size at Eurospares/Europarts 20 for for a tenner... I will search again and check

Just rung classic and chrome they do still have a set of 4200 bolts , asked them their normal price and they quoted £3.50-£4.00 per bolt , and only got it down to £3.00 if we got them 10 sets all in one go , Midland plating still at £3.00 per bolt any quantity says its the time involved in the cleaning and preparation, i'll carry on and persue some other avenues

just been on to these people http://www.globalmetalfinishers.com/ gave himthe approximate dimensions and subject to seeing one has quoted £1.50- £1.75 per bolt in sets of 20 mentioned something about salt protection additive would add a few pence to each bolt , need to get a sample up to him , seems to me they are in Robs and Roz's neck of the woods give or take a kilometer or 3 what do you guys think worth a shot Brings a complete set down to around the £40 mark

Might be best Bill getting your quote based on 200 bolts that 10 sets , if its a case which its probably is where there is a mix of 3200 owners |(bolts are different ) i think same but longer by a few mm then get quotes for 100 of each

Once the cnc machine has been programmed , its just a case of resetting the programme for each model ......... i think

thats what i have done mate! he seems to think that it will be borderline for CNC or lathe on cost. he is looking at both options.

I heard about the Insignia caps being that color - I have tried using chrome paint before in modelmaking and providing it is undercoated and sprayed layer by layer the result can be very good - I accept not chrome. I have ordered a set to experiment with - these are only caps so with a good coating of spray - and some TLC could be a cheap alternative. When I have completed the task I will take some pics to see what you think - only an idea but my chrome nuts are already rusting after only a year - car is used daily so subject to weather etc.

I managed to get an approximate price today on stainless bolts ..................... but the long way round ................ 7/8 or 22,25mm stainless hex 316 grade is £85 per 3m length which does 2 sets , a local guy to me here in MK who can cnc machine them will charge £3.50 per bolt

Woks out about £120 per set that way , i dont know if thats cheap or what but gives a guideline when Bill gets back to us ,

22.25mm ...... Would that fit in a 22mm socket or is he (or she!) will the finished bolt be 22mm? I don't know what tolerance a socket has or maybe a 7/8 socket should accompany the bolt set!!

Good start Loz. I would pay £120 a set

ok chaps, this is the reply from the guy I found:

"Hi Bill,

you'd better sit down!

the grade i've had reccomended by the stainless steel advisory service (bssa) is either cold drawn 316 or duplex 2205, both have a tensile strength of around 800mpa. I'd go for the 2205 as its got better corrosion resistance with the same strength, and not much difference in price. you can't get either in hex bar so the hex will have to be milled on.

110mm bolts 22 a/f 10 off = £18 each, 100 off = £15 each

82mm bolts 10 off = £17 each, 100 off = £14 each

the closest bar available is 25mm, to get the full 22 a/f needs 25.4 so the points will be slightly rounded, although i round them off anyway. They'll still look ok. to get pointy points (which i'll then round off!) pushes the price up ridiculously as we'd need to go up to 30mm bar and a heck of a lot more machining!"

So Loz, it sounds that your guy is cheaper but.... could you please make sure he will be using the recomended grade of stainless steel

Bill the grade that the guy i contacted suggested to use was the 316 , but he wasn,t going to supply , we have a stockist here in MK that can supply 316 ss in 3m lengths of 7/8 or 22.25 mm hex at £85.00 per length plus vat , he was just going to machine the bolts at £3.50 per bolt , as i said works out at £122.00 per set without anything for carriage

Loz...having had my nuts chromed last year and the wheels on and off maybe a dozen times since( me standing over with soft rag in hand....!!!).....no sign of any damage.....are the stainless steel ones going to be as shiny/polished.......doesn't stainless steel sorta tarnish after a while?
