As the Friday drew to a close we began to descend from the heights, many more winding roads, getting held up behind a tanker for an eon, traffic had slowed, over taking opportunities became more limited...the weather closed in, the rain got more persistent...indeed the roads were awash, as non locals and sitting on the wrong side of the car we were unfortunately caught out by much lesser cars.......firstly a Mercedes SLK driven by a German, who picked us off one by one and the final humiliation when James became victim of the dreaded Yellow Renault van sporting all of 60bhp ....pulled out and left him for dead.......;).....;)..............more of this later........:)

Finally Nice was in our sights, as we got nearer, the main group went on, I very smartly took the sign that said NICE and made my way sedately into town.....they went on a wild goose chase....SATNAVs don't ya love 'em.....;)...... Nice is a mess...access to the main Promenade Anglais is virtually limited to 3 points along its 3 miles which meant we were delayed getting into town from the dizzy heights where we stayed.

The evening meal in the Michelin starred restaurant wan't quite as good as that in Beaune the night before, they flattered to decieve, nevertheless another great meal was enjoyed in Le Gourmand. We had driven down...the rest walked back up the promenade to their very nice Elysee palace hotel.....I naturally opened up the 4200s pipes for the locals to enjoy.......brill!

The next day dawned.......wet...wet...wet.....we dicided to head off to Monte Carlo for a reccy....sans Lewis. We took the corniche route which had a couple of short tunnels and they got blasted too by my exhaust. To say getting around MC was a nightmare is an understatement, every usualable sq metre is built on, really....really compact, however we eventually found the casino and parked up.......note Neptune with Trident above the MC canopy........FREAKY OR WHAT....yet again!!!!!!!

And a few more to supplement P's reminiscences...

Yep, still peesing it down!

I'm sure this was a nice place....... in the dry.

Professor P takes questions from the inquisitive locals and poses obligingly for photographs. Shortly afterwards he gave out autographs. Unbeknown to them he kept the pens! :D

As we'd be travelling furthest etc...we decided to stay an extra night in Nice...so come Sunday morning we waved off the rest of the group as they headed north via the Millau bridge....as the day progressed I recieved a number of texts....one of them from the Miles GS crew stated that as they crossed the Millau bridge it was snowing........yeah....yeah I thought to myself...SNOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The day after we dually set off, since we were SATNAVLESS....aaahhheeemmmm...I had to buy a map...whilst also taking advantage of the HYPER U supermarket Helix oil offer....dutifully bought for £40 for 10 litres.....

It was a longer part of the trip than we'd planned.......we passed some lovely sights and places until we reached the D road which took us to the southern side of the said bridge.

Some of us travelled a bit further than the others......;)

As I was saying............SNOWING indeed....??!!..........we had sorta poo-hooed the thought, but sure enough the higher and nearer we got to the Millau bridge the temperature dropped.....and dropped...... til it was barely above freezing......that for the moment was the least of our worries, because as we got within visual distance of the bridge .....a little red light lit up on the dashbaord, accompanied by an urgent beeping.......the sense of excitement dulled immediately......again it re-appeared with more beeping....WTF........we were on the bridge.......small wow...as the light stayed on..............HOLY SH!T......thats my Cambiocorsa light telling me the gearbox had failed/wasn't doing as it should.......we got to the other side, checked I had some gears up and down......the light beeped on and off........kept going.......kilometre after kilometre....we just kept going, higher and higher.....colder and colder.....'0' degrees registered on the thermometer........sides of motorway covered in snow, slight sleet falling......the Massif Central was no joke....3000 ft.....finally 3500 at the highest pass......light still going on and off, down steep hills then up the other side..........as I pressed the accelerator, the car seemed lacking in power....hesitant.....as we climbed ....WTF X 2....light blinking.....beeps....AND the car failing to pull...............a cold sweat in '0' degrees 3500 ft up is not a nice situation to be in.......this went on for the next hour, when will it all stop.........or....the car stop???!!!!

My knuckles were white, my hands were grasping the wheel as if I was trying to strangle someone, I had a dry mouth, my usual running commentary of the sights and where we were had stopped, Madame P could sense the tension.

Eventually, the light went off............we descended lower and lower.....normal service was resumed.

The moniker "Boston Strangler" now seemed less apt.......my tongue unstuck itself from my mouth.......I sorta cracked a smile..........:)

Clermont-ferrand was passed....an hour later we drove into Montlucon...our refuge for two days....phew!
