the finger print thing has stuck - I thought it would be a gimmick and stop being used, but it's still fun and useful.

That was my thought when I heard it announced but everyone I know who has one says it works a treat.

Does the fingerprint thing work in place of the old pin??

Alongside, Dem. you can still use the pin one time and prints the next. You can store 5 prints, so for me it's both thumbs & both index fingers. You can also use it to pay in the App Store, iTunes, iBooks instead of a password.

You can always change your pin and say it only has finger print recognition, that's when she takes the big veg chopping knife out of the drawer...!!!
