So you are buying the new phone and then getting a sim contract..?? By the way, Lady Stig has EE (everything everywhere) and it's **** up here. They sold off loads of transmitters for the 3G network, so that they could afford to be first with 4G and that only works in certain areas..??

A good friend of mine who is a self-confessed Apple fan recently went Samsung because when he compared the specs it just made sense.

But then he emailed me this: "Finally, I've managed to persuade O2 to swap the Samsung for a 5S - it was a big mistake. Stick with iOS : )"

iOS is Apple, is he saying stick with Apple then..??

Thats how I read it. I think the saying here is:

"All that glitters is not gold"

This goes back to the early days of the Apple vs MicroSoft debate. Apple was always spec'd as lower speeds and the PC market was very much into "new, fastest every, quad core....etc" but the Apple always outperformed in real world tests.

Its just numbers and marketing at the end of the day.

The build quality of iPhone 5 is a real let down, the 4 & 4S were much better but it performs much faster on almost all applications.

Technically it may not be up the same spec as Samsung & HTC but it just works. I don't have to reboot it every so often (in fact I rarely do), I can always get the application I need (including my track day timer) and despite what people say battery life is OK as long as you think what you need (I easily get a day out of it).

As stated before functionally it works so well with my other devices, I never find myself without that document, photo, message I need - the joys of the Cloud :)

Must admit, not a fan of the 5 and am waiting for the 6. I have had the current 4 for ages now, and its been bullet proof. I like the weight and solidness of the build over that of the 5 but I don't like the iOS 7 as the 4 cant run it fast enough and it becomes very frustrating.

The 5, although extremely fast, just feels flimsy and lacks its own identity.....its just a big iPhone 4, aesthetically.

I am hoping the iPhone 6 will be a new direction and a new cool. I have heard curved displays on both Samsung and Apple are on their way but I feel its just a gimmick. The iPhone 6 needs to have its own USP.

When I look at Samsung now, they are some years behind Apple, now I dont mean that in a technology way, its more in a brand way.

Take Apple for example, the first iPhone came out in 2007, some 6-7 years ago and there have been 8 variants (I think: 2g, 3g, 3gs, 4, 4s, 5, 5c, 5s...did I miss any?) so the effort to make anything truly different becomes ever more difficult.

Samsung are now just entering the negative, need for innovation stage now, that Apple have been getting bashed with since the 5.

For me, and "end to end" experience (the phone is designed, built, controlled and runs OS all from one company) is what makes the Apple so reliable. If I were forced to change from iOS though, I would, believe it or not, go Windows because they have shown their own direction of innovation, creating something truly different and I respect them for that....even if its not quite there yet.

I have the iPhone 4S and it's been reliable, I can virtually always connect and it can do the stuff I need. I am now at the point of upgrading and I was going to get the 5S. I find iOS reasonable to work with. I had an HTC Windows 6.5 Pro phone, which was good, then Microsoft decided they would not support 6.5 pro anymore and the phone was going backwards. I do not like Microsoft for that, my only option was to pay to upgrade the OS, so I changed to Apple..!!
I would be interested in anyones opinion of the 5S if they have one..??

I'm just a sad Mac user. iPhone, iPad, iMac. It works. Everything communicates and when you want to upgrade, all apple kit has a value.

Sold a 4 year old MacBook Pro for £450, a 6 year old 20" monitor for £250, my iPhone 4S is worth £200 & Mrs iphone 4 at least £150. All good towards 5s& 5c.

He's twenty years my junior and suffers from youth's inability to write clearly. Yes, he meant the Samsung was a big mistake and one should stick with iOS (Apple), he persuaded O2 to take back the Samsung and give him a new iPhone.

I just bought a 5S to replace the 4S I had before, and it still feels light in the hand compared, but build feels solid and the extra screen space is good to have. OS & apps all fly on it, and the finger print thing has stuck - I thought it would be a gimmick and stop being used, but it's still fun and useful. Apple don't do gimmicks often any more.

I have a 4S and agree with all Matt's comments.

However, I must give a big shout to the Nokia 3109, my weekened 'booze phone': super-easy to dial a cab/pizza/lawyer when hammered, and if you lose it ... so what.
