It seems that points accrued for failure to disclose the name of the driver aren't been treated as "real" points.

Is this a carte blanche to ignore speed cameras and just refuse to tell?

I couldn't agree more. However, it is up to the police to PROVE the offence and offender. Merely asking who the driver was at the time of the offence is asking for the offender to make a confession which under English law, you don't have to do. Remember the old adage; innocent until PROVEN guilty. Relying on speed cameras is a cr4p system that gives an excuse to cut down on traffic patrols who are the guys that catch the bad guys. Speed cameras dont catch drink drivers, dangerous drivers, careless drivers or stop unroadworthy vehicles. Cameras are revenue generators no matter how many politicians try to tell us otherwise.

I could not agree more, TAX CAMERA'S are just that, they do nothing to stop nutters and are only there to collect money..!! Driving at 55 in a 50mph open road limit and they can bill you for around £60 is a joke..!! I know we have to have speed limits on some roads, near schools etc., but the majority serve very little purpose and most drivers today tend to drive to road conditions..!!

The bigger question is; why do we put up with the french?

Actually, cameras *do* catch assorted nutters, but only when they break the speed limit ;)

Do we need limits? i think there's a very powerful argument that there needs to be but one motoring offence 'Failing to drive at a suitable standard'

If you adhere to the old biker adage 'drive to a speed where you can stop where you can see the road is clear' there's not a whole load to go wrong. Clearly there's a need to drop that when outside schools, or other areas where children (for example) may dash out from behind parked cars, but it's a pretty good baseline, I feel.

We don't complain enough, mostly just put up with these silly ideas..!! We have to pay for the Tax Camera's that are used against us and that's how it is for now, but if all we have to do is say I don't know who was driving, then that's what we will have to do..!!

Far be it from me to point out that it is simple to avoid getting speeding fines, mostly......

Now veering dangerously towards politics ;)

We all know the rules Mr.C and my licence is clean, but where I can I drive at what I think is a sensible speed, which may not be the same as that which others try to dictate..!!

When I had my Evo I had a radar detector that I got from the states. It picked up alsorts of frequencies even the ones not used over here. Apparently, over there, schools for the blind, deaf and disabled have/had transmitters which alert the driver through the detector that there was a hazard ahead and s/he should slow down. Over here they made such detectors illegal because it was felt they were perverting the course of justice. Surely, if the detector was giving me an advanced warning of a camera sited at an accident black spot and gave me more time to slow down, that would be a good thing that would make such black spots safer. No, they would rather catch me speeding at an accident black spot so they could fine me. It's all bollox.

I still use an old Road Angel that has camera's stored and also a radar detector, you can set that to identify blackspots (schools) and they work well, they also show a very accurate actual speed display which is useful..!! That coupled with such as a TomTom which has updated camera's, keeps me safe most of the time..!! The first radar hit from front, or rear sensors, means you have about a second, or two before the 2nd hit from the radar gun, so not much time..!!

You can either believe them or not depending on your viewpoint. I choose not to because, IMO, most of them have more faces than Big Ben and are not to be trusted.

If you actually READ that report carefully, it is so full of holes it beggars belief..!! Some sites accidents actually increased due to cameras..!! "If cameras were turned off overnight, accidents would increase", how on earth would anyone know they were turned off, so why would accidents increase....????
I wonder who has paid them to come up with this rubbish, we have all heard about past antics of RAC, ripping people off etc..?? This seems like making a quick buck regardless of the truth, or not..!!
Then we have to contradict that, a massive increase in revenue from cameras, so loads were ignoring them, perhaps thinking they were switched off, I don't think so..!! A manipulated report to make the use of cameras seem the best course of action...!!!

Vested interests from road safety groups and w4nkers that object to speed in whatever form. Such objectors are usually old, boring, stupid, misguided, incompetent or just plain obnoxious and complaining gives them 'un raisin d'être. Such people should be given a 9 mil pill to the back of the head and sea dumped.

Everybody should have to drive a 70's british car once a month to realise just how fast they are driving nowadays. Most people rely on the car to protect them with no thought for what the car might do to any innocent bystander. The majority of people drive at inappropriate speed and should be penalised until it sinks in that they are a danger. Snipers on top of speed cameras would be my solution.... Rant Over.

Surely, most slow down for speed cameras so the snipers 'Rules of engagement' criteria would be largely unmet. However, as I am one of those singled out in your rant I would, no doubt, be in the crosshairs no matter what. If you ever end up in government I will have to keep my eyes open before before I get them closed, permanently!

I doubt it? - it's only aimed at those that don't realise how fast they're going - hooliganism can be quite safe in the right place - anyway snipers wouldn't be able to shoot fast enough to get you. :firing10:
