Steve honestly it's subject to the Tech your speaking to. It's all metal so even if it has a problem it can be fixed. Some say they last much longer. Personally I'm going to tell you that they fail as well. I included the information for the all metal purist. The best ones are the custom made brass/copper ones that really early model vehicles used to have. Brass works over here in the U.S. sell them for $600. Some believe that it's worth it. Personally I don't expect to have any trouble with the heater core after replacing it with the one I bought yesterday, not at least for as long as I own it or the person after me. Here's a good idea for you chaps over the pond. We should group buy brass/copper ones from a company that builds them, only we are no longer a Maserati Forum, we are Saab Enthusiasts that just love the 92'-98 year 9000's! The first thing you'll see is it won't be $600, the second thing you'll find as you have a bulk order is I guarantee you won't even pay the original cost of what these cost through Mas. If you guys cannot find a place over there I will be the Saab representative in the U.S. and will contact Brass works. I would appreciate whoever reads this doesn't contact them and tell them what we plan to do though, unless you just want to pay money because you own a Maserati.
If we decide to do this, I will just take my dash apart again after we get them. I will have one in the car for now if I decide to drive in the cold so that I don't ruin the dash board of my car.

On the basis that the Saab 9000 & Alfa 164 were based on the same platform and the 166 is just a later update it is not surprising a number of components are the same and given that Fiat love to use cheaper parts in more expensive cars we find a similar unit in our Masers.

Hi I'm just a plastere/builder I don't have bags of money. I was lucky to come into some mooney to afford my GS. If I can save money I will but looking at a part for about £100 and need it like yesterday. So I'll take all the good info yourself and others have posted and get my car runing again. but also like the sound of group buys for a superior products for my car

Well you're gonna do OK on the heater core!

Lol Chris!..............................
I've just about finished taking the Spyder apart, I have about another hour worth of work. I can't stand some of the cheap plastic and that gummy button spray they put on everything. It's on some of the plastic parts under the dash as well.

Steve don't worry about it. I'm a bit younger than most Mas. owners....36. When people look at me over here and give me that corner glance as to how I came by the car. I just tell them I'm a drug dealer. Since they are already jumping to conclusions I don't mind prodding them a bit. I really don't think I look like one, and I definitely didn't come by it that way, but hey all in good humor right? I think that's why most of us are on the forums......to learn and save money so we understand you are trying to save money.

I'm pretty sure my neighbours have decided I am a drug dealer too. I just smile and wave

I prefer Street Pharmacist instead of drug dealer but I guess either works! Lol!

Okay on a more serious note here's what my beautiful baby looks like now. Looking to get the new heater core tomorrow:

Chris I might have an electronic question for you. There was a few reasons I decided to tear into my dash. One was the obvious spray of anti freeze into the cabin, but secondly I lost my lights on the dash. I honestly figured that I lost all of the bulbs. Now that sounds crazy of course because when do all of the bulbs blow at once? Usually never. I played with the dimmer switch and no dice. Now I took the cluster out pulled all of the lights out and they are all good. So now I'm trying to figure out where the problem is with the cluster lights. You are first going to ask if I checked the fuse. The problem with that is all the other lights on the NIT and HVAC control work wihen the lights are on at night. I'm thinking they are all on the same fuse. Correct or no? Do the dimmer switches go on the cluster for these type cars? It looks to me there's some white dusty material on the back of the dimmer pot. Figured I would just ask the forum since I've already got everything apart.

NIT lights are indeed on a different circuit. They are fed by a connection underneath the console.

I've seen one report of a dimmer going. I think actually the entire dash went. Do the idiot lights work?

My idiot lights do work, just the night illumination lights in the cluster don't. I removed the dimmer potentiometer and opened it up, and worked contact cleaner into it really good. What specific fuse controls these? I looked in the manual and I didn't see one specific fuse dedicated to the cluster night illumination lights. Did I miss it or am I correct is assessing that it's a fuse that controls a few other things not just the cluster lights?

Not sure about the fuse, but I think it's pretty clear that the issue will be straight power feed. Can you trace the feed into the cluster that feeds the lights. They are on a different circuit (clearly) than the idiot lights (this is normal) and that might give you an obvious clue.
Failing that it might be time to change your fuses for those ones that light up when they blow....

I'm sure you will have checked already Craig but is it possible you have a dry joint on the back of the cluster?

okay sorry guys I didn't get back to you I am almost finished installing the heater core. I cleaned the contacts off with an eraser and I put a rubbed them down with contact cleaner. I'm hoping that doesn't it. You know I honestly don't know why they but the air bag module right under the heater core. It's crazy but in either case the Saab heater core definitely works. I replaced the heater hoses going to the fire wall as well. So here is a photo of the two heater cores sitting side by side.
