People shouldn't be afraid of mileage on most cars these days....even Italian ones.

Most modern cars can do big mileages when regularly/well maintained.

Does highlight something wrong in modern society when we can only value an amazing 2008 piece of engineering at only 6k.

Why? The biggest problem with the S-Class is Mercedes. As you say, the car screams amazing engineering, but Mercedes constantly trump it with better and better engineering in newer models. A 9/10 year old S-Class is exactly that - old. It's old tech, in a car that rides high on being technologically advanced.
The Maserati QP is basically already old tech (similar to the 4200 in engine for example) and sells for different reasons.
So, the Merc is like cutting edge prototype early versions, with Mercedes engineering, so it works well, and is well put together, but when it does go wrong, the complications can lead to some serious bills.
The QP to my eye, seems not to push the technological envelope too far, so doesn't have the same worries regarding super complex electronics etc. and most who buy a Maserati aren't buying it because it's the best spec'd comfort machine, they are buying the whole package - looks, sound, performance, comfort.

The S-Class is like a top spec laptop. You want it now, but in 10 years time it's virtually worthless and doesn't really do what today's laptops do.

The QP is like an artwork. It costs a lot to make, and drops off in value when they are more common, but then, as it ages, it becomes desirable to those who can afford one with the lower entry point, then (presumably) starts to appreciate.
