She's had the temerity to grow and therefore require increasingly larger steeds. Could be worse - somebody I know has had to do the same thing, but the daughter refused to pass on the old ponies. Now paying for 3 and only using 1!

Yes, exactly. Probably the once-cherished weekend plaything of a recently deceased chap who'd forgotten all about it in his advanced years, discovered by the estate valuation people in a remote barn.

Yes, I can almost see the advert
Low miles, needs some minor bodywork and a good groom as well as four new shoes.

I spend a lot of time in barns and the only things I ever find are piles of horseshit. I always wonder where the 60's Porsche or unwanted DB5 that must be there somewhere is, but I've looked in all the corners and there's no sign

Anyhow - back to the topic...

Would it be odd (or foolish) to ask Christian Lewis to do a pre-purchase inspection for me ? If they will even do it. Part of me thinks they might be "conflicted", but on the other hand they are a well regarded name and they'll know the car better than anyone. Appreciate that the OP might have already got the same thing but not clear whether he commissioned a full PPI or whether the buyer can actually "rely" on it so to speak.

It all depends how much trust you have in the seller , I assume you're in contact by pm or phone so will have an idea of the person you're dealing with.

I don't think for a second this applies with this car or seller but I've put the phone down on a few after 2 minutes talking to them, innit

If the car was recently serviced what I'd do is ring the garage and ask them about it , having looked at the history and condition of the car it's really cherished so personally I think an inspection is money you could be spending on petrol

I haven't contacted him yet but will next week.

An inspection is mandatory from my perspective, it's just a question of who does it

I would always do an inspection. On one car I bought it was well looked after, just been serviced. Got a indie who was recommended to me and he spotted that the slave cylinder was leaking.

It was an engine out job and cost £3k which the seller got at cost from the service centre because they missed it.

Whilst it was in doing that I put in a new clutch and silicone hoses.

And then bought the car for the same price I had negotiated.

The car had just been through the workshop as Christian Lewis & will be sold with clean bill of health

That says to me it's been inspected already, a phone call would confirm it

The problem with that arrangement is that if CL have missed something - eg. through negligence - I have no contract and no recourse to them. Admittedly unlikely but does happen. Certainly not suggesting the seller shouldn't have bothered as there might be some willing to proceed based on that alone but I probably won't.

Then to answer your original question you should take it elsewhere to get it inspected

How does it work , are they liable if they miss something on the inspection, seems a bit risky for £300 since a variator problem can be 10x that

I'd be very surprised if an inspection carried any insurance element

You won't get anyone doing an inspection to accept liability either.

of course an inspection isn't insurance. But to use an extreme example, if the inspection tells me the car is fine and it turns out to have a broken axle that an apprentice mechanic on their first week would have spotted, I think they won't have a leg to stand on in terms of liability for the buyers "damage" caused by their negligence in providing a service that they have represented they are competent to provide. Obviously that example is very black and white but I use the example to make the point, its shades of grey from there.

Anyway, all besides the point. I'll look for someone else in the area who can travel to CL for me if I decide to proceed. I've been offered a couple of others since I indicated interest so will explore those too.

I'd be rather surprised if there wasn't a disclaimer involved and with such they'd refuse the work. But.....

The Unfair Contracts Act limits the effect of disclaimers to what is "reasonable". Obviously subjective, but I'd be pretty confident a contract that says "you're paying me to check the clutch but if it turns out I was wrong and the clutch is buggered it's not my problem" wouldn't be seen as reasonable. Whereas one that says "if I make a mistake my maximum liability is 5 times what you paid me" might well be reasonable.

Obviously errors happen and that's a matter for discussion between the parties - and often an insurer - as to what's an appropriate remedy

I've recently switched focus from 4200 to QP, I like the looks better and actually proper 4 seats would probably be better for me. Sadly I am 4.3 weeks away from being in funds. But if it's still around I'll be in touch, looks lovely

Give me a call, would consider holding it for a fellow member, My F Pace is now Due 4 March , so happy to agree something,
Christian Lewis is putting 12months MOT on it on Saturday .

Cheers l

Matt,

For the Record ,
You have not made any effort to contact me .
Those that know me on the forum know me & the province of the Car.
I'm puzzled as to why you would add hypothetical posts without making contact??
If you are genuinely interested the car is available for ANY inspection you or your man would like to undertake .
Please do not post non car related chat on this thread.

Hope this message is received in the spirit it is written
