For me it would have to be something solo, wouldn't want the hassle of employing people with all the associated paperwork/hassle.
One of my old school pals is a solo undertaker, done it since leaving school for nearly 35 years. Does all the 'doing up' himself, and hires in all the cars and men in black.
He has, and still is, making a packet. Steady trade, economy proof etc!!
Infact going on a MTB ride with him this afternoon. I will be on my 17 year old Halfords special, he will be on his new carbon fibre special...which he will be bringing in his new £100k Rangey...black, of course!

(There are downsides to this though, he has never found love, but, I guess he has plenty to pay for it...)

£100k restoring cars! Good luck with that!

I tend to agree. Starting salary for a Consultant Brain Surgeon with 20 years training is 75k.
But having said that- nothing would suprise me about modern day life.

The army is well respected and a tough job- I guess time there is never wasted. Also agree it gives you skills and experience that most jobs would want...
The doctors salaries in the U.K. Are a joke. That figure is true. It's why they are striking and the best ones either lose morale, leave the NHS or go abroad

Totally agree, why go through all that, sure some brain surgeons would make great pipe fitters and platers / welders etc, but I guess you go where you go, I come from a family with a forces back ground but to be honest I joined out of necessity, left home at 17, no quals really from school, equivalent of 10 GCE but I did not want further education so walked in the careers office and the rest as they say is history, Apart from the last 4 years I loved every minute really. Been and done some amazing things, seen some horrendous things but overall would not change it really !!!!

Partner is a Consultant for the NHS and I am surprised at the pay she gets. She also retrained as a Medical Negligence Lawyer some years ago...was paid 4 times the wage to pick faults in NHS work but returned to health as she hated the morality of it all.

As she says there is more to life than money and until you realise that you will never have enough.

So True I'm one of 8 boys and the only manual worker trades person out of my brothers.
The others are the corporate desk jockeys over weight have had health issues and have to ask how high to jump but they get paid a lot more money than me.
I would rather be me and now looking forward to my next role with Ford and Mazda.

Couldnt agree any more, i had a vaguely similar ephiphany after spending 6 months self employed chasing my tail with very little r&r. Ended up sick, fat and stressed. Then took a big pay cut to go back on the books, but in a fantastic company and have never looked back. There's more to it all than just the cash..
