Mark,

Sadly that is more true now than ever which is why I have come close to moving my banking elsewhere. They have closed all their branches except the one in The Strand and although they have offices in a number of places there is as far as I know no counter service apart from The Strand. So basically I now end up doing most of my day to day business in my local Natwest branch who to be fair seem to be pretty well briefed on the situation.

It used to be far more personal and in the days when I worked in London W1 the service I got from my local branch in Cavendish Square made it in those days much more worthwhile!

80/20 rule sadly :(

The Strand was where I got a job, and had to do an aptitude test (do they still do those?) in Cavendish Square.
I guess the more automated banking becomes the less need for branches. I guess that's no more evident nowadays with Lloyds closing hundreds of branches.

There appears to be little need to go and see your bank manager, or account manager. If you need something you pick up the phone or send an email.

You can make good money doing this and as you rightly say there is no tax to pay on the profit.

Robin, if HMRC see a regular pattern (6 cars a year, every year?) then they will argue you are a 'trade' and therefore tax/NI you on it.

Both are urban legends re car parks...I think every city has the same.

However when I worked at Strangways I went to our relief car park rather late kn a Saturday evening to find the gates open and a guy asking if I did not like the show???

Bemused at his questions I pulled my jacket off and he saw my uniform and batton and scarpered.

Turned out he was charging customers of the MEN Arena £2.50 to park there whilst it was empty at nights and would cut the padlock off each time and replace it with a new one leaving the key with our own dodgy security gard.

He would have over a 100 cars in there...quite a industrialist.

Speaks volumes about an utter lack of enterprise that would leave a car park empty when clearly people are willing to pay to use it. I applaud his initiative. Give the man a Queen's Award for Industry!

Pity you aren't; you should have told him a 60/40 split or you'd do him in. Everyone's a winner!

I parked in one of those £5 car parks when I went to a gig at old Trafford, got there early , parked in a space , came back to find they'd filled it like they knew how long every car entering was and if they had a space for it , utter chaos getting out, took me an hour , some guy blocking about 20 cars in must have gone for a meal.

Of course the "organisers" of this chaos were in a pub somewhere counting out the money

Like that time I was in Italy. Finding some parking on a street near some tourist attraction. Got waved at and directed into a space by some tall tanned Italian guy with a fanny bag.

He then says hey no charge. Just pay whatever you like wink wink.

In the lonely planet it actually tells you street parking is run by the local mafia and a couple of euros will ensure your car is still there when you return.

Surely something like car storage with facilities to work on your car as well that can be hired out has some legs?

Needs some capital outlay to rent a warehouse and security and insurance.

Is there anything you have not got in the pipeline??

Though to be honest when you get that setup the warehouse will just be full of your own fleet!!!

The cogs are always turning

Sold the hybrid at the weekend so down to 7 now. Will probably keep the XC90 until next year them try to sell it & the wife's Freelander 2 to get a 2nd hand new shape XC90. That will be 6. Must need a replacement to top up then! I think I'm OK for a while.
