It's probably one of the 'cheaper' ways of losing your license. MAF borrowed one for a short while and concluded that it turned him into an unmitigated hooligan and owning one would not end well.

Driven a few. It's a different kind of car. It's much more sports car than GT car. It's not a continent crosser for me. It's hardcore, lots of diff noise and drivetrain shunt, but nothing much faster at that price point when you want to be really on it.

Surely it simply amplified an existing tendency in Maf's case?

You make a valid point! But where Banana asbo is loud, GTR asbo is blistering speed. And the latter can land you in hot water faster than the banana can go from 0-130dB.

Thanks all, I've been reading some reviews as well, and lots of what you say is mirrored in the reviews...

Anyone who says 'Playstation' hasn't driven one. I did a few laps in a GTR the same day as an F430, LP560, 12C, 997 Turbo and R8 V10. The Nissan sticks in my mind for having a very boisterous character, a total hooligan. It came alive at lower levels of commitment than something like the Maclaren or Audi too.

And anyone who says it's just a Nissan? Let them polish their cars and waft around in them thinking about history. I like driving, which is why I like my GS but I also don't suffer from this bizarre delusion that all non-Italian cars are inferior...

I can't help but feel that tinkering and incremental upgrade costs on a GTR could be terrifyingly expensive. "Just one more waffer-thin 200hp, Monsieur....?"

It can never end well.

I had one for a week in 2011, loved it but lacked soul

It remains the quickest car I have ever driven, a real license looser and can be dangerous if not handled well.....saying that it's a bargain for what they could be had for

Some nerves have been touched here. Just shows that we like our cars for different reasons.

The GTR is a Playstation, Top-Trumps, car. Its built to do a job and it does it well. That doesn't mean that I have to like it. I'm allowed to be a snob and prefer the styling and panache of an Italian marque. It doesn't mean I'm wrong, It also doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with others liking it.

interesting thread. I think it depends on what you want from your car. the whole thing about Maserati that we presumably all like is the style, and the feeling of being in a "special" car. I think from my point of view i know i could buy plenty of cars that would be faster, handle better, and be easier to keep running, my last TVR was faster and much more reliable than the 3200, and yet i like the 3200 better. The GT-R is clearly a quicker car, and if speed and performance is what you really crave its a better buy for sure. I am not sure its even snob value, i love the excessive amounts of leather, comfortable seats (not track seats, seats designed to drive across Europe in) and the fact that the interior space is a lovely place to be, and the outside looks wonderful, people who have no idea what sort of car it is, stop and say how nice it looks, i doubt the GTR would get that sort of attention. The GTR is technically a better car in every respect, but it concentrates all of its effort on performance and not on making me feel comfortable and happy on a daily basis except when i am haring round a track.

I have reached the stage in life where I have no interest in which car is faster than which and I don't do track days.
As I sit in the car at 60 in average speed cameras I want to feel it is still an occasion.
Did the fast Impreza thing 20 years ago. Fun then but got bored with it very quickly.

Given the space there'd be room for a 1960s Datsun Fairlady in my dream car collection. So whilst I cherish the privilege of tooling round in a Maserati, there's nothing any the less special about some cars from many manufacturers. Toyota 2000GT anyone? For me the GTR just doesn't look as nice as others and I suspect I'd have less fun owning one compared to the undeniable joy of owning a Maserati and being part of this particular 'club'.

Oh, and I'd lose my license in a GTR.

At the end of the day, when it really matters, will someone pick the Datsun keys out of the bowl!? ;)

I did think about them - but it's a Nissan.
The Cali 30 is as fast and different league interior and style, I think it's worth the extra money.

I thought the GTR did the 0-62 sprint in 2.7s?
Which Cali can match that?
