My 17 year old daughter has one fitted. It has ensured she has learned to drive smoothly, and allowed significant insurance discounts.

Wouldn't want one in my car though!

I can't see this becoming compulsory until legislation kicks in to make it so, or all cars are fitted with them when new. Until that point there will always be insurers willing to provide cover without them, at least for a price. It's a few years off becoming widespread beyond a few companies. They've not sorted out what happens when you switch insurers yet.

Until it becomes a standard box and a standard approach to measurement of "events" its going to be a niche product.

The article says that over-25s can currently save about 90 quid by fitting a tracking / telematics device. I'd happily pay that to NOT fit one. Well, maybe not happily.

If I'd had one fitted today I would be walking for the next 20 years so they can p!ss right off. I didn't have an accident or cause one and I'd rather not have some junior clerk sitting at a desk assessing my driving without seeing it in context. I'll pay more not to have one fitted and big brother can kiss my ar5e.

Doubtless there isn't one of us would want one installed in our cars but Shak is right to be worried. I don't like were it is heading either.

I understand your daughter benefitting from the lower premiums now - and it is probably teaching her to be a better driver - but I wonder what will happen when she asks to have it removed in future years. They will regard such a request as a higher risk and charge accordingly. It could well be that your daughter's generation may be stuck with these for the rest of their driving.

Once there is a "quorum" of cars using them some bright spark in the gubberment will decide all cars after a certain date will require them.

To use the immortal words always trotted out by our masters, I can hear it now: How could you be against them? If you've nothing to hide you nothing to fear.
