Hi Greg,

2 things to try that might have gone wrong:

1. Did you plug the V A G lead in before installing the driver? If so, Vista will have looked for a driver online and won't be using the FTDI one. If this is the case you'll need to uninstall and start again by installing the FTDI driver before plugging the lead in.

2. You might have been unlucky and bought one with a non-FTDI chip. You can check this by unscrewing the cover and seeing if one of the chips has FTDI engraved on it. If this is the case, you'll need to get another.

If it's not either of these, let me know and I'll have a think again. I used a Vista machine to write the guide, so it should be possible. I'll also check the FTDI site to see if the drivers are still there.

Have been stuck at home with workers in fixing my ceiling so took this opportunity to come at this again.
Uninstalled all the ftdi stuff, installed the driver then reinstalled via the ftdi link. Plugged in the lead and same again.
Still getting "application failed to start because FTD2XX.dll was not found" message. Opened the cable up but writing was too small to read on chips however advert clearly says ftdi.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/***-KKL-U...566309?hash=item4175c2ab25:g:A5YAAOxy7nNTVq3Z
I need help guys. Do I give up with the "sat in the drawer" for 4 years vista laptop and get something else, buy different cables, or is there something wrong with the downloads? or what else!......I'm at the end of my very limited IT knowledge with this so an idiots step by step might help (and when I say step by step, I mean step by step from pushing power button on laptop to plugging in lead!)
This is about more than identifying the current CEL, I always knew at some point I'd need to have a reader to identify if a CEL was an easy enough fix that my Alfa mechanic could do the fix (knocks for instance) or if I needed to take her to Phil as a specialist because without having that fallback I can't justify taking her nearly 500 miles every time I have a problem....

Is the 3 pin lead and software similar to the one used for 90s Alfas, there should be some knowledge on that up here if similar.

download the FTDX2.dll file and copy it in the C:/Windows/System folder as per the video.

I'm just wondering if that is the FTDI driver as there are many google results for FTD2xx.dll and they are not related to the Unidiag/FTDI driver.

Greg, here are the locations of ftdx2.dll on my machine with unidiag installed. It's a 7 Professional 64bit laptop and runs fine.

Recognise those same ftd2xxdll files from the ftd download so can't figure why I keep getting an error message saying it is not there?
Re chip in lead. Writing was too small to read direct so took a pic and zoomed. Can't see ftdi on either chip. One has WH ch3401 over 202686303 and the other chip has DNWYSSR G4 over LM339 ...........yet it is advertised as ftdi, does this mean it is not?

First off check they are there and if not copy them to the correct location. Set Teamviewer up on your computer and I will connect and take a look.

It sounds like your cable doesn't have the correct Chipset.

Cheers Phil. Guess from what you say the first step is a search for a correct cable. the link I followed for the cable, is that the same one you use? Also if there is an ex 32 owner out there with proven cables gathering dust, drop me a PM.

Ok. After a breather to regroup on this I plan to put the laptop to a computer tech to get him to clear it and reset it then get him to download the software as on the unidiag link since I still think the weak link here is probably my IT skills :(
The cable I bought does not now seem to have an FTDI chip in it so I need to locate one that is confirmed as FTDI. Does anyone have one lying about in their garage they no longer need or have a link to a cable they have bought, which works and that is confirmed as FTDI? For info, the cable I bought is on below link and although in the detail is says FTDI, neither of the chips have FTDI on them.
Marci seems to be running fine since the throttle reset (thanks Phil, in 3 years of ownership I had never heard of, or needed to use this!) but the CEL remains on, so slightly nervous every time I turn the key or drive her.

Greg,
If you need an IT tech locally I can point you in the right direction if you don't have one lined up.
Super efficient and much cheapness!

Glad to have helped, the CEL can stay on until it is cleared, I've seen it before but the software will allow you to do that. I am happy to send you my cable to test it with and then send it back to me once you are done? I have not driven the 3200 for a month now.

I would contact the Ebay seller once you have tested my cable (known working ) and then get them to refund you.

I need to wait for a replacement battery, this one not holding a charge....works fine when plugged in ;) was going to use that lad in Dingwall but if you know someone who knows their stuff would prefer a recommendation to just yellow pages ;)

Well mate, I am no guru but the USB end looks ok.
The other end casing is the right shape, like a Scart shape. I guess it depends how many pins are used or required.
I will check mine tomorrow and count the pins. Mines for a QPV though.
Sorry cannot be more helpful

Yes it says it has the FTDI chip but then again the cable you posted from EBay said it had it.
