If it works, good news for us Spyder owners as it's one less thing for scraggy little runts to nick from an open parked car.

Always thought that there must be better ways of getting a revenue from road tax. I would have added the cost onto fuel, then the more you use the more you pay. You wouldn't be able to drive and not pay it and you could get rid of a complete department and infrastructure that supports it. It would also mean someone like me with many cars would only pay for the one I was driving at the time.

At least moving to electronic database removes the admin part but I still end up paying for cars that are parked up :(

It's not road tax....

C

That's obvious given the state of the roads.

It is a Road Fund License - i.e. a License to use the roads, therefore by definition the money raised should be used to maintain that the roads we are licensed to use are of a useable condition.

I know it goes into the central taxation pot and therefore it should not be a road fund license. This further supports my argument of adding it to a general taxation class e.g. Fuel. As previously stated the more I use the more I pay, the more fuel efficient vehicle I choose to use the less I pay and vica versa - the choices are mine.

Rant over

Er, I think it's actually a Vehicle Excise Duty, and *therefore* a tax for the privilege of owning a car and keeping it on the public road. The rest I can't but agree with you :)

About time I say, it should all be done on numberplate, but the golden question is, that £7m saved by scrapping paper discs....it will be reflected in a reduction in the tax price yes??????

...so cynical for one so young :)

2.47m cars on the road, so that's £2.83 off each. *Super* ;)

I can't believe it "only" costs 3 quid to produce and distribute a tax disk. Equally, I'm sure the savings will be swamped by the costs of a new system. And its replacement when the first system doesn't work. Cost should go on fuel, then all road users would pay, including foreign visitors.

As my esteemed colleague has just pointed out, I was out by a factor of 10, so it's in fact 30p per disc.

Having said that, I'm not sure what the discussion about how to police or new systems is? As far as I know, the database is already in place for the ANPR stuff, and the police haven't been looking at paper discs for a long time.

So it *seems* to me that they'll just miss out the step of sending out the actual disc.

I could be wrong, of course.

Who actually checks Tax Discs these days, Traffic / Parking Wardens, Police on the Beat (do they still do that), so what is the point really..?? Traffic officers just do a PNC check and they have all the facts. When it comes to cars with false plates and untaxed / insured / tested vehicles, nobody knows unless they are spotted, or are involved in an accident..??

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) patrol cars and static vans are checking vehicles 24/7. It flags up if it sees a vehicle with a problem or is of interest to our porcine pals. You might be checked half a dozen times on the same journey and you wouldn't known unless there was a problem. Paper discs became redundant several years ago and it's about time they were scrapped.
