Went to the dark side yesterday with a mid '12 Macbook Air 13.3" (1.8 i5, 4GB RAM, 128 SSD). Currently running OSX Lion 10.7.5, question is if I upgrade to Yosemite or Sierra, even with my system being capable will I notice a large performance decrease?

Upgrade it all the way. It will not affect the performance one iota. There are some useful benefits, particularly the ability to split screen which I find incredibly useful. I was anti-Apple until I was given one from a previous work a couple of years ago. Once you get used to the multifunction mouse pad (try running 3 fingers up it and swipe with one or two fingers in various directions), it's simply more intuitive and a better user experience.

Still have a desktop PC too and with touchscreen and Windows 10, it's a lot better than days of old too.

I'm not switching from Android though...

Thanks, its just the limited ram I have which concerns me when multi tasking. Just tried the 3 finger gesture, it's great cheers. Even with face time, I feel like i've discovered fire even though web cams have been around since jibes

I went from windows to Mac about 18 months ago. It is soooooo much better.

I would recommend buying a caddy though. (They're about 10-15 quid).

Take your hard drive out of your old laptop, plug it in the caddy and then download everything to your Mac.
Bingo. All your files on you Mac without any bother at all!

Still running a 2007 MacBook Pro, upgraded the hardrive to a SSD about 5 years ago and its on the latest OS and it flies...

Mac is expensive but like anything Apple, it just goes on and on and on...

In line with everyone else, just keep upgrading until you can't no more :)

<gazes fondly, although virtually at 2G Mac mini that's only just stopped being supported>

My mother has a PC laptop and an Android phone. When ever I am round there I get a nagged with questions and asked to constantly fix it.

All she uses it for is Word, email and ordering shite online.

I have told here on several occasions, all she needs is an iPad but she says they are too expensive.

Tempted to just buy her one and then not get nagged.

Windows PC's have their place, we have several at work, just not in the hands of my mother.

Another convert here too and absolutely no looking back. I still have one windows tablet which I keep purely for diagnostic software that won't run on a mac or iPad.

We did exactly this for my in-laws. Other than a few initial issues getting used to the change they just use it now and there are no issues with forgotten passwords or the battery not holding a charge anymore.

Currently downloading Sierra, will let you know how I get on. The performance alone has me hooked, even the latest windows stuff seems to clog up on me.

Oy vey! There appears to be an Apple love-fest in the offing. Apple SchmApple. What does anyone really "do" with mobile comms? Telephone, email, Google, shop, the occasional spreadsheet perhaps. The quirks of any system are just that - a relatively small price to pay for the convenience.

I installed a free program called WINE, which enables you to run windows programs on a MAC. I thought it would be shite but its brilliant!

Ok, reporting that Sierra is now installed and running smooth. Siri is a great addition but has it's limitations no doubt.

Very impressed thus far folks.
