I installed a free program called WINE, which enables you to run windows programs on a MAC. I thought it would be shite but its brilliant!

Used to be awful. The problems tend to come with external hardware (comms ports etc). VMWare Fusion is very good as well

Thanks for the heads up, but I also need something portable with USB, so that rules out the iPad and I'm not inclined to carry a 27" iMac out to the workshop. I'll look up WINE though, sounds interesting.

I use a wee Toshiba hybrid laptop that can split into a tablet for that. For what I want it for it is fine.

Mac? Emporers clothes IMO.
Since Fiona "forced" our changeover 3 years ago I've struggled to see the benefits and it has fecked all my photo library from 2012 back and now irreparable even if I try to use the old PCI laptop........photo processing and storage main thing I use a computer for so sticking to my emporers clothes view of the lovely looking but piece of useless 2 grand cr4p sitting in the corner.........rant over.

I have a 27" IMac for the screen , but run it in Windows because i have to run AutoCAD and Solidworks.

You know they have autocad 2016 for mac?

I have both a mac and PC. My wife's mac laptop lasted 8 years! Didn't miss a beat and then I sold it on eBay for £100! Every update didn't make it slower or render it useless like a windows PC. It actually just improved and then when I upgraded to a new MacBook it still functioned fine and I managed to sell it.

Can't say the same for my windows laptop where after 5 years it was slow, dead and worthless.

I have to say the Apple laptops are streaks ahead. The touch pad and keyboard of the MacBook is the best I have ever used. And it is tiny and so light and thin!!

I wouldn't let the built in Photo programme organise your folders!!! My god!!! That is a disaster!

I would organise your own in a simple file structure and then use Lightroom to process and manage them.

You will find the mac so much quicker at processing images than a PC as things like photoshop have been reprogrammed to maximise the available power from a mac.

I assume your photos are still there? It has probably just tried to re-sort them. The easiest way I have found is to run a search on the disk for all the files and filter out the thumbnails it has created by setting a min file size that is greater than the thumbnails and manually select them and refile them.

Well this is what happened to me. But your case I guess might be different if you are unable to retrieve.

I use a photoshop relative- Lightroom because it has the best library/organisanitional option out there, and since I am absolutely useless with IT I got a local IT company to look at it when I noticed my pics were shot and we are unable to retrieve even when reverting back to PC. All my pics from 2012 back are white blown beyond repair looking like they have been shot under 40k of fluorescent lighting and no one can explain why since going Mac this happened. It processes my current pics fine but in all honesty, no better or quicker than the last PC did.....and don't get me started on trying to convert some HD video files with it! Takes twice as long, with reduced quality compared to PC process. I repeat, love Fiona, but f'n hate the thing.

Never been a lover of Mac (no, not a sweaty docker from Leith) so couldn't say with any authority but it is possible your original photos are not lost.

Had a thing 20 years ago (can't recall exactly what, when, how) where an extensive .mp3 collection got corrupted. Except it wasn't. The originals had all been renamed, different extensions, hidden files & folders, etc. Bit of a nightmare. The "visible" files in their place were the corrupted copies which didn't play properly.

It was most likely a virus, however, Mitsu the master pervert (that's another story) worked his magic and found the original data on the drive. IIRC the extended file attributes (creation date, etc) of the originals were unaltered.

I see you've tried a local firm already. Presumably this was to fix the "white" problem. It may well be worth trying a deep scan to see what, if anything, turns up. Today's scan tools are pretty easy to use too.

Not a fan of Apples photo application, I have tried to get my head round it and have probably decided to move back to Photoshop & Lightroom however it is quite hard to destroy the original photos with it as its normal position is to import but leave the originals in tact.

As suggested above you need to scan the disk to find them they should be there somewhere

I do like the apple concept, but i don't want to try one.
Call me old fashioned, but i still have the windows XP on mine, i do a format every five years and all goes perfect. Just bought a notebook which has the 10s on, and which are awful.

I wont add comment in this thread, however if anyone would like Apple for business in any volume or even a single item etc drop me a pm.
I am the UK Business Sales Manager for an Apple Premium Reseller based in the UK and IE and with the Apple Store within Selfridges in London for the UK arm of the business however very strong in supply to business of all walks. Thought I would mention as most IT companies purchase Apple at some stage.

Thanks for that.

I must confess I purchase all my Apple IT from John Lewis, purely as they offer a 2 year warranty FOC.

In fact I do this will all sizeable tech items if I can for this exact reason.

No I understand that and its a great brand. The only good point with Apple is the return rate is marginal unless its iPhone. We have the official Warranty Repair Centre in London that Apple Regent Street and Covent Garden use for overspill, and the return rate isn't huge. Its such a well made product, however everyone has their camp on PC vs Mac and that needs to be respected.

Ive seen a few comments about upgrades and windows etc on mac. With the current roadmap I think the key with anything Apple is to spec up from the start as most products the memory is soldered to the logic board so unless your looking at upgrading a 27" iMac you cant add additional sticks at a later date, and one that throws people off 6 months when they want to speed things up. Running programes like VMware Fusion and Parallels to enable the use of both Windows and OS X will always require more Ram so its worth noting this from the start, I would personally always look at 16GB as standard when running a windows environment which most of my customers do for ease of use on customer specific software. Unsure if your aware or not but the MacPro is now also being revamped, Cupertino is announcing a lower priced standard Mac Pro and enhanced version due, better for a massive amount of my film and editing customers that are rendering intensive work on a daily basis and also more power per bucks. Although not official and only my personal view not associated with Apple in any shape or form, I cant help thinking an iPad MiniPro will be unveiled at some stage, they have totally discontinued all iPadMini now apart from Mini4 128GB which is a strange decision.
