Sorry you misunderstand me.

95% of 'road tax' is *not* spent on roads. So electric cars still need to pay Vehicle Excise Duty to help make up the other 95%

The government, whoever they are, basically have one source of income. Tax. If you don't pay it on VED, you *will* pay it somewhere else. Fairness will be subservient to making the books balance.

Step change is simply not an option for any politician that wants to keep their job more than one term.

2009 VED = £32Billion pounds.
VAT on fuel = £4b
Average petrol price = £0.9 per litre of which 15p is VAT
So my trusty back of a *** packet indicates that roughly 26 billion litres of fuel were sold.
To raise the same revenue on the same amount of fuel you would have to *increase* the cost of fuel by £1.20 *per litre*

So what PM is going to be the one that tells the great British public that your fuel is going to jump from 90p per litre to £2.10 over night?

There's more tax on fuel than VAT , it's about 70% tax

Good maths ;)

So basically they are ripping us off already and don't need to change anything so I'm wasting my breath. Maybe I should do like many others & not bother with car tax at all. No point in being a squeeky clean law abiding, employer who toes the line & never causes any trouble. Who says crime doesn't pay? Politicians & bankers have been getting away with it for years! Don't get me started on Philip Green & his colleagues!!

Maybe I should bolt an electric motor to each axle of the 4200 to give it over 500bhp then get it IVA tested & then reclassified with VOSA for zero road tax!

Works out to nearly £40 a month in road tax to use it once. If I do 10 miles that is £4 per mile plus fuel. Add £2k per year servicing/maintenance and I must be over £10 per mile. Lucky she doesn't depreciate or I'd be broke by now!

Need to drive/use it more, sell it or stop moaning about it and accept it!!

Agreed...I'll put up & shut up then!

If you can't beat them then join them as the saying goes.

Maybe I should become a politician or a banker.

In what way are they 'ripping us off'? The money to run the country has to come from somewhere. Or is it just the perceived unfairness you're not happy with?

(I guess that might depend on which 'who' you're talking about as well as you seem to have gone from fair petrol tax to that people with privilege can play by different rules)

Sorry I'll rephrase as it obviously isn't the same for all as the playing field is far from level. The system is ripping ME off. Others in different positions get a much fairer/better deal.

I pay nearly £2k per year in car tax for two drivers with a total mileage of less than 15k. Doesn't matter how many cars we have as we can only drive max 2 at once.

There are two many odd variables. Buy a car registered in early March 2006 and it is capped at band K. Buy one registered late March and it is £505. There are no discounts or concessions for low use or multiple cars you don't use often but still use once/twice a month

You can do 100k miles in a hybrid Lexus & pay less car tax than a car that pollutes less & does less miles. There are too many anomolies & imbalances in the current system. It just so happens that the system is unfair to me but others benefit more even though they are heavy users.

It was cheaper for us to drive a V8 into London to go to my daughter's dental appt/treatment as a family of 4 and pay for parking for 2 hours than it was take the train. It was quicker & more convenient as well but shouldn't the train be quicker or at least cheaper?

We play plenty of tax as personal individiuals & as a couple of small small businesses. Far far far more than we use. We pay extra privately for health & education so don't use much state cash there. No refund, credit or concessions there. Funny thing is we are quite normal, far from rich and have to look after our pennies. That is kind of my point & why it is unfair to us. We again are paying in far more than we are getting out. I don't mind paying more to help the disadvantaged & have no issues with that at all. It is just a little too much.

I just would like the car tax system to be fairer, better balanced & make more sense for me. It doesn't at the moment.

One way street....and one full of pot holes and ruts!

Quite frankly this leaves me cold. There are only two unavoidable certainties in live - death and paying taxes......
Road tax, additional fuel tax, it will not matter which one because there will always be winners and losers with either system......so long as they leave me enough for my favourite tipple and some petrol, I'll be happy ;)

This is it exactly. We all (rockits included with the greatest of respect) make choices. We don't have to have V8s or many cars. Nothing is hidden before we go shopping, so none of it is a surprise.
As for paying 'Far far far more than we use' Really? You think our tax money 'excess' is being used for something else other than (best endeavours of the current government) running the country? Clearly we can all disagree on what is the best use of tax revenue, what is important and what *we* want it spent on, but I really struggle with the concept that we're putting more in than we get out.
We don't have kids, so we shouldn't pay for education? I have private healthcare, so I shouldn't pay for the NHS? I live in a low crime area so I should get a discount for police services that I never use? No. My tax (I *hope*) should be used to educate those that don't have the advantages that I had, so we have a well educated workforce in years to come, to pay for police in areas with issues where police intervention is required to make them safer, to pay for the healthcare of those that cant afford to go private.

And yes, there are those that willfully abuse the system. This should be prevented. Yes there is waste in the system(s). This should also be addressed. Do I *like* paying tax? **** no. Do I pay all the tax I should? As far as I know, yes. Do I pay enough? Almost certainly not....

If you don't feel you pay enough then pay a little more for me! Everyone's happy then ;)

I know plenty of people that constantly benefit massively in business while conducting work for government departments & the NHS. That massive waste in inefficiencies is half the problem. The wrong people are benefiting there for sure.

:rofl5:

Apart from Mrs Catman :)

I agree that undoubtedly some of the wrong people are benefiting. Of course the solution to that is simple as well

LOL

Indeed...often seems to be simple answers we never often seem to take. Wouldn't life & the world be a better place if it were all simpler & easier. We can only dream.

One of my sons friends & his family are moving to Luxembourg in a few weeks.....sounds tempting ;)

On the potholes front its the local council's job to deal with them but they often don't unless someone complains. It does vary from council to council but some can be quite responsive to a complaint, possibly via the local councillor.

On the tax front. I pay a wack of tax on my car and we pay nothing on Melissa's with it's tiny engine (8 cylinders between the 2 cars). On the trip we just took we paid tolls on some of the roads. I'd be up for that if it would allow road tax to be reduced/scrapped. That might help balance the equation a little and works for both the expensive hybrids and for petrol eating monsters.

Ah, now potholes
During the recent Tour de Yorkshire (very prestigious for the town and a grand day out) the cyclists route was diverted through a lovely local park and everyone thought what a good idea. However it was done deliberately to avoid the council having to fix about 30 potholes on the main drag out of town. The potholes are still there and as mentioned elsewhere I have just paid my £515
