No, he was taking the kids from the hospice round the track. The sergeant driving was on nights so he only managed to get 2 hours sleep before coming to the event. He spent all day there and was back on at 10 that evening but he said he wouldn't have missed it for the world.

I've signed up for this year's event. Apparently, it's a real tear-jerker...
