Yup, second that on getting black not chrome sockets for heavier stuff. Had chrome ones break before so only use black for heavy stuff now. They are mainly made of solid metal & thicker walls. The chrome ones are often a metal composite and nowhere near as strong. Smaller stuff is fine put when your putting a lot of torque/pressure on you don't want it to give way then. Trips to A&E are over rated!

The donor has gone to its final resting place. It took 5 of us to lift the bare shell onto the truck.

Space now cleared (Mrs MAF kind of happy I kept to schedule) so I can begin stripping down the 944 in readiness for its new heart.

Buying new tools is always a joyful part of any project. Now I want one!
Seriously, ping me if you need more hands on as I have some free time right now. Have rebuilt a 911 in the past, still waiting for the right time to do my own project.

Only managed about 3 hours this afternoon due to other priorities. Fairly productive, though...

Things didn't go quite as planned today, plenty of head scratching to work out how to remove everything most efficiently. The main issue is that the engine can't come out connected to the front subframe as part of the mount is welded to the chassis frame. The car now looks like this...

I've taken off everything underneath and the engine is now held in by just 2 bolts, the gearbox at the rear supported by a stand. It'll all come out tomorrow, then a few final bits to come off the shell before it heads to car heaven to be reborn into a toaster in China.

I had the excuse to buy a few new tools for this job - a shiny new engine crane (cheaper than hiring one for a week), some 3 ton axle stands to complement the 4 I already have and then my favourite new tool of the moment:

A half inch drive impact wrench, 24v and 325lb/ft of torque - this has saved me so much time today it's unbelievable. How I have lived without one of these for all these years and projects is remarkable. 25% off at ECP this weekend - bargain!

I've stripped the car myself without any assistance. He made me lunch on Friday and helped to put the parts away in the shed last night, though. Under duress!
I'm not fussed, I really enjoy doing this stuff. I think I'll make a start on the 944 next weekend, can't wait to get stuck into it.

Nice to achieve big tasks using your own skill and muscle! took out engine and gearbox from a 911 myself using a trolley jack and "skate". Still have said skate, although maybe a manta-ray is more accurate description. It is a double coffin sized 7-ply board with huge ball bearing castors. Still have the thing if anyone ever needs to shift a big unit.

Dem will be giving you a call before this year's Xmas party. That would have come in very handy for him at last year's!

Really? I heard you had to strap a plank across your ar5e to stop yourself falling in. It must have been like throwing a pound of tripe up the Blackwall tunnel.
