Glad you decided to pick it up rather than having it delivered. You need a decent drive to get used to it and if you're thinking of the expense of a tank of fuel then you're buying the wrong car ;)

Luckily I found a tech conference nearby so claimable expense on my company

Going to gatecrash this thread a little... I've had two in the past - first was an '08 4.2 and the second a '14 4.7 MC Cabrio. And then I exited ownership (along with marriage - fist-bump), but now am thinking very seriously about coming back into Maserati ownership. I tried searching back to remind me of the various derivatives, specifically around the need for the MC Shift / 'correct' gearbox. I remember a thread a long time ago about this but can't find it in my post history, so help would be welcome.

Specifically I'm looking at this car... https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/maserati/granturismo/maserati-granturismo-sport--mc-autoshift--amazing-colour-scheme/7345980

Any comments / help / pointers would be most welcome in respect of the gearbox (and also how to tell to the layman). Am I right in thinking that MC-Shifts don't have the 'gearstick' in the middle??? Or am I being too simplistic......

EDIT: just noticed I still have the pic of my last one as my avatar thing - happy memories, even if it was a bit 'Essex'

It's an auto mate (MC Auto shift) which is better than the earlier sport boxes for sure and gives you nearly as much driving involvement as the Roboticized MC Shift box and no clutch costs to consider.

Hi mate,

No worries on the crash its fine!

In regards to gear box i was looking at the older Massers in those i believe the Auto (Stick) was a little smooth for people, and most liked the aggressive nature of the MC Shift (Buttons), when i test drove it was great but in traffic and small moves it was a bit of a task have to admit.

So in the one i just brought is an ZF auto (no clutch wear to worry about) and has been tweaked some what with the MC Auto Shift software. So effectively you get a smooth transmission for those days you just want to cruise and then in sport manual a quicker changing more sporty gear box. You do still have a stick.

I think my personal choice was in the 2013 and on models the ZF Auto is more than exciting enough so the MC Shifts do seem to be fairly rare in these newer models.

As you will see on all the discussions, the advice is DRIVE BOTH and make your personal choice.

Lovely example i spotted that yesterday, same interior as the one i'm picking up on Tuesday! :)

Super thanks - so if I'm deducing it right, a big thumbs up on that front!?

I was also looking at this (granted, a different price point and somewhat more 'larrey' in its appearance). If I could put upon your opinion by comparison in terms of the mechanicals / gearbox / ... (ignoring the aesthetics as that's all personal taste - subtlety v's not-so-subtle!):

That's very helpful. I have a more 'aggressive' car now for days when that's required. I'm actually planning on using this to a large part as a daily commute of 25 miles each way, which requires a bit of cruising on the M25 (when that's not stop-start). And as my practical going to Waitrose car (and yes, I'm face-palming myself with that thought right now...!).

Planning to see it at the weekend all being well...

Again a nice example, for me when i was looking at the old Massers the interior always struck me as a little dated (Seats, steering wheel etc) so i'm pretty glad i picked the newer more up to date interior.

As far as mechanics are concerned with this older one you'll need to get a full inspection done to ensure nothing is ticking away like clutch where and other stuff that when i did mine it was a very long list.

Just depends whether you want mad balls out changes with the potential of some costs on the horizon or some more refined changes with the option of slight sporty ones with no clutch worry and hopefully on a car of the age and miles you found nothing too major coming up.

I was lucky enough to get a 15 month platinum warranty on mine, i would insist on one always.

Read back through the first few pages of this thread and you'll find the list of items on the 2008 one that they found during the inspection. It was quite long!

Great - will do thanks.

My first one was a 4.2 2008 (I bought it in 2013). I completely gambled with it and bought it off a guy who traded from home in odds and sods of cars. I gambled and got incredibly lucky on it too. The only that that needed doing was tidying a little trim around the glovebox that had peeled and a new battery. It could've been so much worse in my naivety! But, it'd been serviced regularly, low mileage... and sold it after about 18mths for 4k less than I paid for it (which I figure wasn't bad all things considered!).

Anyway, hopefully one of these will suit (there's a couple of others that I'm considering) and I'll be back in the Maserati would shortly...

Yeah that was a bit of luck, its a draw from Massers since i saw one when i was 20. Promised i'd make it before im 40, picking up on Tuesday 4 weeks prior to my birthday :)

Hope all goes well, look forward to helping you narrow down your options :) keep posting them!

Agree that the new seats look much nicer. Enjoy your pick up day.

They are more supportive too - a definite improvement on the first ones - and the fatter steering wheel feels nicer in the hand too

Am i right in thinking the newer steering wheel is flat bottomed too and a little less massive in circumference?
