Is there an element of trick question here, with maybe Doyle being converted into doily?

No. No tricks to it at all. The only thing i would say is that when i write this type of question.if you have a two or more word answer for one of the clues then it might be only one of the words is the clue to the link.

I can tell you out of 6 teams in the quiz this week. Only one team got the link / connection. The other 5 teams kicked themselves.

Your five clues are:

1. Which Character did Martin Shaw play in The Professionals ?
2. An electrical device fault or malfunction is known as a what circuit ?
3. Bearing its name Kendal is famous for which type of cake ?
4. Robert Carlyle played a police officer and title role of which Scottish comedy drama series ?
5. A person who is very cleaver could be called a what pants ?

My question is what is the connection between the answers from the 5 clue questions given.

Are these the answers everyone else has?.....

1) Ray Doyle
2) Short
3) Mint
4) Macbeth
5) Smarty

yep only thing i had different was Hamish Macbeth

They are the 5 clue answers and as Andy said its Hamish Macbeth. You have a couple of two word answers so to make it a bit easier.
1) Ray Doyle
2) Short
3) Mint
4) Hamish Macbeth
5) Smarty

The words in bold being the clue on the two word answers.

I will try and come up with another clue although that might prove difficult.

They all have two letter words in the answer, Do, Or, In, Am or Is, Ma?

Not that this is driving me mad or anything

I did not know No.4 Hamish Macbeth and so held back.
The others I knew were the characters that made up the Diddy Men the invention of Ken Dodd.

He was once asked if Dodd was his real name, he replied 'no it's an anagram' and finally
he once said he could tell a joke in Liverpool and everyone would laugh but they would not in London.
Why not? was the interviewers response
Because they cannot hear it.
