Spare set of wheel bolts.

Hi Guys,

If this is the dark side, then what's the other place? The flip side? The back side? The west side? Anyway I digress..

I recall 'over there' there used to be a spare set of bolts available that were offered forward to anyone wanting to chrome them on the understanding that they would likewise offer theirs forward to anyone wanting to do the same. Can't remember whether they were 3200 or 4200 though?

Anyway having spent numerous weekends last summer cleaning, spraying and lacquering mine only to have all the hard work undone by a pneumatic wrench, I'm wanting to get mine chromed and be done once and for all.

I don't suppose anyone has a 4200 set available on a similar understanding do they? I'd be keen to 'borrow' them and could return them afterwards if this is the better way to do it?

Many thanks, Emtee.

Nice one Steve. I have a spare set for the 3200, don't think they fit 4200. only have 4 per wheel instead of 5 so its up to anyone if they want to take risk, or maybe someone has a few odd ones to complete my set.

Anyway, not going to post the but willing to bring them to meets such as Ace.

No the 3200 and the 4200 bolts can not be interchanged, the 3200 are much longer, please note if your 3200 has had 4200 wheels fitted you will need to borrow a set of 4200 bolts to chrome

Hi Steve,

You are both a Gentleman and a Scholar, however you present me with a dilemma, as I was hoping to get them done prior to the meet so that my car didn't let the Mid-landers down! Just ordered various bits of cosmetic clobber from Eurospares with the same thing in mind!

I see you're Sheffield based. I need to travel up to Hudd' on Monday and could pick them up on my way back? Is this do-able?

Cheers, Miles.

Hi Steve,

I'm in Luffbro. I haven't arranged anything yet as I wasn't certain whether I could locate a spare set to borrow.

I was thinking to go with Loz's recommendation.. Northampton and Midland Plating Co.

I'll call them tomorrow to get the low-down and report back.

Thanks again for your help with this.

Cheers, Miles.

I can recommend N & M plating co. I had a set done there on Loz's recommendation and a really good job they made. About £100 I think for the 20.

Need to get some stainless steel ones made. I have a guy that could do it. I ll dig the quote out and let you know the costs but obviously the more we get done the cheaper it would be. Anyone intrested??

Hi Bill, Pretty much everyone I would have thought given that the standards are rust magnets!. I'm going to go with chroming for the time being, but it's always good to have options! Cheers, Miles.

Hi Jezza, Couldn't get through to them this morning, but in the meantime had come across Classic and Chrome in Hinkley. Had a chat with them and they said all the right things and can turn them around in a week or so. £3.50 per bolt. I'll post with the results. Cheers, Miles.

Miles, that is an amazing price well done mate.

Just hope they are up to standard. So the old boys keep telling me, modern chrome is not what it used to be which I find surprising.

This might be incorrect but is there a reason that stainless bolts are not universally used? I understand that there is a tensile strength issue with stainless steel in this application. I am quite prepared to be shot down on this but I would like to know if there could be a potential problem.
If the application is ok what target price are you aiming for and are you hoping to do both 3200s and 4200s?

I'm sure you are correct alfamaserman. I have been told by trusted engineers to beware using stainless in all sorts of places due to tensile strength/stretch issues and the fact that stainless work hardens and then breaks. Not good for any application but certainly not for wheels. A good quality chrome should last plenty long enough and has a much superior finish, the accent being on the "good quality".

stainless steel is available in various tensile strengths. as long as the correct one is used it is fine. i have been quoted around £18 each for 3200 bolts done in stainless. this is by an engineer who produces binx nuts for industry at a factory in northampton.

There are various grades of S/S. On motorbikes they can be reptofitted to calipers which have the added element of heat! In my epirience with chroming, you get what you pay for. Have been quoted anything from 3.50 to 15 for each of the bolts. Chroming never lasts for ever that's why they chromers never warrant it for long
