Ya think they did that so they could charge more for each individual button. Who would have thought each button was different!

Latest update : all back together AND WORKING!

After many many hours I have finally completed the redoing of the five buttons that looked identical but were not.

To do this I had to start by removing the multiple layers (6 or 7) of matt varnish, the two layers of satin black and the one layer of white primer.
I was relieved to find that using the same 99.9% Isopropanol that I had used to remove the sticky goo eventually worked. I thought at first it wasn't going to and I was very worried about what else I might have to use - would it dissolve plastic? But a LOT of elbow grease and the Isopropanol did the job in the end. I just then had to respray all the buttons again - waiting a couple of hours between each coat and overnight between the primer, then the black, then the varnish. Time consuming, or what?

But today I finally completed all the buttons, reassembled everying, put it all back in the car AND IT ALL WORKS!

Photo attached of the finished result. I had decided not to attack the radio unit as its buttons weren't too bad. The rest look "OK". Not at all as good as brand new of course, but on the other hand they are not ever going to become sticky.

Thank again Andy and everyone else.
Tony

I’ve repaired some window switch plates on a GT today.

I removed them which was a bit of a mission but once off used IPA and a scotch pad to remove all the mess.

This leaves a very scuffed and hazy surface.

15 mins in the ultrasonic cleaner at 50 degrees, dry and panel wipe then I did 5 coats of Matt lacquer over the raw, hazy surface and they came up like new.

It takes a lot of time but the costs are cheap and the results amazing.

New question...
Although not too bad, I have decided to redo the the sticky buttons on the radio unit. Andy has sent me all the relevant stickers (thank you Andy) and I have just received further supplies of the matt varnish and the Isopropanol. Before I take eveything apart and remove all the sticky goo though, I have an important question, please.
You may recall that to my horror the five similar looking buttons on the accessories panel were in fact different, leading to my having to strip everything off and start over. So my question is are the buttons on the radio panel that look the same actually identical?
Many thaks
Tony

I seem to remember they were subtly different.
I kept mine in order as they are placed on the radio unit. The other option is using a Sharpie pen and mark the inside button with a number or letter and draw a sketch of which button goes where with reference to that number or letter.
Only mark it on the side of the inside of the button otherwise it might affect the button illumination.

That makes sense in my head!

Do you just use water in the ultrasonic cleaner or something else?

Great effort Tony. Time consuming but satisfying. No more sticky black fingers!
Hi Andy

Would it be possible to obtain some 4200 button stickers from you at all? I have scraped mine back to white and then painted them black but just need to now pop some stickers on them after my plan to rub transfer letters on them failed

Many tbanks

Hi Andy

Any indication when you may be back and able to send the stickers at all? I’m sorry but I’m unsure of the process regarding getting payment to you and my address details etc. is that via a personal message or separate text?

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,

Yes sorry, I sent you a PM yesterday. The envelope icon should have an alert next to it. If you open that message it tells you what to do.

Cheers,
Andy.

Sticky plastics are on the agenda for mine. By far the worse is the ashtray lid, I'll start with that, following guidelines here. Just need to figure out how to remove it without breaking it and getting covered in black gunk!

Thanks Paul, money received. I'll try and get them posted tomorrow.

Regarding the laquer I applied over the stickers, I used Autotek matt laquer. Although any matt automotive laquer should work.

As you've painted them black already, you won't get illumination at night. If you want that then I'd you follow this thread:

It should explain how to do that.
Cheers.

Hi Andy

Super. Many thanks. I’m not precious about the buttons lighting at night as it is rarely used after dark so I think it should be fine and most certainly a huge improvement on the mess that the switches were when I bought the car.

Cheers. Paul
