Thinking of upgrading from a 3200 to a 4200

Can't compare new with old. My QQ is best car I've ever owned on that principle as done 5k in it and nothing has gone wrong which is A first. I reckon all car manufacturers should let me test drive their cars as I will find a way of breaking them.

That does look gorgeous but I have to admit I am still not sure on the sill covers, they look fine from a distance but up close at some angles look awkward but each to there own.

Its strange I had always been fairly anti turbo and to be honest fuel injection as nothing sounds better than open carbs in my opinion but the sound of the turbo's as you put your foot down has become almost as addictive. I always loved the sound of the 4200's and have always preferred the sportier exhaust note but in some ways think the more subdued sound of the 3200 suits the car.

I'm sure I (and most people) would be happy with either but went for the 3200 because I preferred the look and rawness plus felt it was purer in both design and DNA. The only time the manual 3200 seems a little unhappier (or I do as a driver) is when sat in heavy slow moving traffic but I didn't buy it for that and this small niggle is vastly outweighed by the pure pleasure I get from it the rest of the time!

I have also been told by a few experts that these days there is no reason why a good 3200 should be anymore problematic than a 4200 - I hope I have not jinxed myself now!

Is that your GT in the background?

......Is that your GT in the background?

Yes mate, had it for most of my driving life. It went to Le Mans Classics a few years ago, didn't miss a beat.

It has the OEM wheels on it now (as in the 1st and 2nd pics) not the aftermarket rubbish you see in the others.

A very cool looking car, I don't think the aftermarket wheels did it any favours but sometimes its nice to try something different I guess. Its so difficult to pick wheels for a car but when right they can really make a difference.

I do like your Opel Matt, I saw one on the M42 a few months ago and I hadn't seen one for sometime. Next to today's cars, it is so so small, but perfectly formed I have to say

I have owned a manual AC for 8 years, but have only been passenger in 4200 & GS.
I also now have an early-ish QP 4.2 so my experience might be relevant, given that I have same engine and gearbox as 4200cc (faster changes on Sport GT ;) )

The 3200 is intoxicating, like riding a rodeo bull when at full chat, but can also tootle thtough town like an Amish horse and buggy. Nobody in the general population sees a 3200 as any threat or a hooligan-in-waiting. It does however threaten to "kill me" every now and then, but only in a good way. Very edgy and demands total concentration to drive fast. Still a sumptuous place to go sit and relax. Proper Jekyll & Hyde.

The 4200cc engine and box is totally different, almost as fast but much more "show-off". The noise is great and suits a mildly updated exhaust, revvingto 7500 rpm is epic and the cam kick at 5000rpm was a nice surprise. The looks of the vanilla 4200 don't excite me, even thoe 15 spoke wheels look plain in silver. Maybe Ferrarri temed the 4200 to tempt back those 911 and M5 customers? Would consider a spider though, should always have one open top car in the fleet.

I only buy cars I love, rather than like / want / need. Hence I will always own the 3200 and QP (rather than 4200 / GS / GranTurismo)

My secong 4200 was the same paint colour, but black and tan inside with tan stiching on the black parts and black piping on the dash...it looked stunning...and again I should not have sold...esp with the GS body up grades.

I think those side skirts on the GS were described by motoring pundits as "Surf Boards" at the time. Pretty accurate really.

A late GS in stealth mode (without all the nonsense stick on bits) and proper early rear lights would be the bee's...
