Good luck, we had terrible trouble trying to get a Leon Estate from Seat, eventually we gave up and swapped to an Octavia. That was at the beginning of the year when they were switching models so supply might have improved by now.

Should have hung in there and got the £250 cheque from SEAT for making you wait...

Sister in law and her other half liked their Nissan Qashquai so much they have just bought a second one and now have one each.

Your budget might just get you the new shape, which I understand is a sportier drive and the 1.2T is better than the 1.6 n/a it replaced. You have a commanding driving position without the 4x4 drawbacks.

Now wash your fingers and keyboard before mentioning an unspeakable car on here...

I know that 4 doors needed and two strollers but why is everyone saying a hatchback......There are much bigger family cars out there for 10 and if space is key then and estate must be better than a hatchback....Stuff like the 3 series touring and the like.

One of the best cars we had when we had kids was a VW Touran DSG. Massive boot with 5 seats up and van like with back seats down. Nice low floor so easy to load stuff in/out of boot. Also much easier on the back for getting kids in/out of car.

We had a high spec model with the higher output 170bhp engine, full leather, Nav, heated seats. Bought it off 1st owner at 3 years old I think, it got used & abused for years with just a service each year @ VW. Only thing that broke other than routine parts were rear springs but cheapnto replace.

It was good enough to drive and cheap to run. Bought a spare set of alloys with winter tyres & it would go anywhere in winter.

Has advantage of 7 seats as well and all 3 rear seats are individual & same size do you get 3 kids seats across the rear. Sliding individual seats so can have bigger boot or more rear legroom. Seats fold down and cone out to leave a van space with great load capacity.

My wife hated it & I loved it. Bought for 8800 & sold 5 years later for 5000 I think. It was a great package for a family & dad who used it for part time van as well!

One of the best cars we've ever had in doing a great all round job with no rush at minimal cost. The XC90 is now doing a similar all round job. Both very good at what they do.

Because Saloons are a PITA to get things in and out of especially strollers. Even a 5 series has a very narrow access for high sided items like folded buggies etc.... Why have a 5 series running costs when a Golf would do? BMW are class leading but a 5 series executive saloon isn't a family car.....end of.....

Just like to add I've bought the Mrs a Vauxhall Mokka SE, it is roomy (we use it to go North in), is fully specced with leather, heated seats/steering wheel, parking aids, has a decent enough boot to get stuff in for a week away and returns 60mpg. £10-11k will get you into a car with a 3 year warranty.

My wife's 3 series touring had more than enough space in the boot for two pushchairs and a all sorts. Far more than any golf sized hatch back....and her E60 Touring was just huge in the boot.....never found a problem with it. Lots of good estates out there for 10k that have far more room than a golf or Astra or focus....but as you say running costs will be more so suppose it's about what suits best.

There was a couple of hints towards sarcasm in my post. Namely every word...

Did you read the pros and cons!!

You didn't say Touring.

Sorry Phil....thought I had.......Touring would be on my list as a decent car if needed space.....To be honest any of the mis class cars have a **** load of space....Modeos etc......

Remember my mate had a Golf and it was a lovely well built car but they had to kids so bought something called a Golf Plus for more room.....They then bought a roof box as it wasn't big enough......He should have got an estate....In fact he said that after a trip in my wife's E46 Touring.
