It is a US CDN spec vs Euro Spec thing, but bear in mind that cars with US spec emissions gear were sold in Europe.

There are two part numbers, one is for US CDN and has three bolts if you look at images, the other is not US CDN and has two holes. The two part numbers below are the only ones listed for this component.

The three hole pipe will be very close to a euro spec manifold and will not allow the heat shield to fit.

Personally, I’d swap the casing over on the pump to keep it how it should be. If not, be very sure of the welder (back purging etc) as a bit of welding slag will make a big mess very quickly.

I was wondering instead of trying to weld the 3 hole triangular end from the new pipe to my old pipe, would it work if i just cut the pipe(more or less in half) and get some high temperature silicon pipe and jubilee clips and join it that way?

I know it a bit heath Roberson but i wonder if it would work. hmmm

Bear in mind that this pipe is the only supply of oil to your engine and that should it fail a very large bill awaits.

It’s all down to your appetite for risk, I might do the hose and clips as a “get you home” solution, but personally I wouldn’t do it permanently.

You could probably do it that way with some Aeroqip fittings from a Motorsports supplier.

So I suppose the problem boils down to joining the oil pipe if I go with the just cutting the oil pipe method,From what I can see of the Aeroqip fittings it is more for braided hose but really what I want is plumbing fixtures straight pipe connector type thing

But of course I do not know what the oil pipe size is That is why I was thinking along an outer silicon hose join, and clips, as I can get the silicon hose in various sizes/dimensions

Anyway I appreciate your comments Thank you.

Hi Phil Do you remember if the water pump from the euro spec cars, had a two hole fixing (like the oil tube) or a 3 hole triangular fixing as is on my new pump? Is this someting else i need to worry about?

Yes what you are saying makes sense, I am not sure but the oil pipe looks to be made of aluminium? I could put an outer aluminium tube over the join (rather than silicon or rubber) and get it professionally welded at both sides. I think that would be a better option?

I wish I could remember but it was nearly 10 years ago now.

There is only one part number for the thermostat which also fits Granturismo and it has three bolt holes.

As for sleeving the tube and welding this would be ideal. The trick is going to be getting the new flange in exactly the right orientation in three dimensions so the the rigid pipe goes where it is supposed to. One or two degrees out at one end will be a lot at the other, so you’ll need a specialist fabricator and a jig to hold it in the right place to get it bang on.

Thanks for that info Zep fingers crossed it will be the same.
I see what you mean as far as orientation the pipe has a few kinks so it would be prudent to keep it right
At my car club last Night i asked around if anybody knew an engineering firm that did alluminium welding and was please to find out there is one nearby, so when this new pipe arrives (fingers crossed again) i will start the fitting with my Mecanic (I am also thinking of documenting this with photos as going forward with no more pumps from Maserati anybody haveing this problem may get some info).

Best of luck. The more I look at this, the more I think that changing the casing over is the way forward. A guide for others will be invaluable though.

Yes just changing the water pump would solve a lot of problems, would not need new oil pipes etc. I would need to take the old pump apart and see what condition the shaft is in,and any rust or damage does not extend into the oil casing,I have not ruled just doing this out Zep,Time will tell

So,Oil pipe that has been on order for weeks finally turned up and surprise surprise!

its flexible! (well half is) perhaps the worry of trying to make it fit may not be such a problem if i can get a bit of wiggle room. with the pipe not being rigid, as i thought it was.

Anyway all will be revealed when I take it in to change the water/oil pump, but somehow I still do not think this is going to be straight forward. Ho Hum.

It’s not the flexible bit that is the problem, it’s the solid bit that goes past the exhaust manifold. But I have said enough, you will find out for yourself shortly. :)

Well my spyder is away to get the water pump sorted.

And of course I am apprehensive as to it getting done without problems. Ok this is a Maserati we are talking about, so problems and apprehension go hand in hand!

Still had a talk to the Mechanic he has done these pumps before, so that cheered me up and looking around the garage, my car is with good company!

So fingers crossed that it will be fixed.

Well after talking to Carlo at TopGear Cars Bathgate. He is waiting for some new studs for the exhaust but apart from that he was 95% sure all will fit and have the car sorted within a few weeks.

I will have an in-depth talk with him once i go to collect the car,and pass on all the info i can so other Maserati 4200 owners who may have this Water/oil pump problem, will know how to sort it.

PS (You should see some of the cars Carlo is selling on his site, real eye poppers!)

There is a guy on youtube goes under the name 'Sailing SV pipedream' who has bought a CatS Maserati Grandturismo, and is in the process of doing it up himself.
Really interesting especialy as what you would consider a CatS rightoff, and a Insurance idea of a CatS.
Well worth a look
