4200 for £25k? Or GS? Differences?

Hi

Following my thread re the test drive, I've now got my eye on a 2005 4200 coupe. With no garage I've reconsidered getting a Spyder.

The 4200 coupe is £26k. 13,000 miles. In the colour combination I like (red and cream). Its from a very decent independent garage.

Does that sound expensive? I think that's GranSport money, although not a low mileage GS.

What differences are there between the GS and 4200? The prices seem to overlap in 2005/6. From looks alone I prefer the interior on the 4200.

Will appreciate further thoughts. If its a flyer I'll be looking for an independent to inspect, car is in Surrey area.

Thanks all, from a very excited

The main differences are aesthetic - interior and the exterior adornments on the GS. Under the skin I think they're pretty similar...marginal (5 bhp) power difference, and a sligthly different ride height. The GS is only available with flappy paddles though.

Have you seen this? A few more miles but still quite low - cheaper, just serviced, stunning condition and previously owned by a member on here:

Thanks

Thanks for the link as well, I did see that. I however would rather the CC box. But otherwise that car is exactly what I'm after.

Considering what Richard is asking for for that car, and the other car is a CC with less miles, is £26k verging on being a fair price?

Now these are just my thought.......26k is too much for a face lift....OK its low miles but you would loose a shed load of cash just driving it out of the show room. There are a number of face lift cars at the moment from 24k to 29k but all have been for sale for an age...Most at two well known Maserati specialist.....You can get a good face lift for 17 to 21k to be honest and OK they will have 30k to 50k on the clock but you will not loose anywhere as near as much cash when you drive it home................

A GS will have higher miles on but wll not loose a great deal of money at 25/26k as prices have held firm for the last year........For me it would be a GS.....but if you are not a fan of the GS interior as some aren't hunt down a face lift but would not pay 26k for one..I know Richard Grace has another one coming in as well as the red one.....As I said these are just my thought..........

Good luck with your search....

This one caught my eye........Clutch last year....42k on clock

Thanks Andy. I started reading your post with some apprehension as having slept on it I'd come to the decision that £26k for a facelift was too much. I am extremely glad that your opinion supports my view! Thank you.

I think I will look for a 4200 coupe CC hopefully getting a 2004/5 for below £21k. The delirious grin that was painted on my face following the test drive has now worn off a little bit and I have engaged my brain.

I'm yet to see a red car in the flesh but the photos have me salivating! But I'd rather not buy too much of a "marmite" colour. What are considered the classic colour combos? I've got to say I'm not a fan of the red or blue leather.

Also one thing I've also struggled with is spotting the 2003/4 facelift with the MSP traction control, the updated gearbox etc. Is there any easy way to spot the upgrade?

Thanks all
R

2003 update was just internal...so will look like a 2002 4200.....The 2004/2005 facelift was well a face lift...So you get a Gransport front grill and back bumper......Car looks like a Gransport without the wheels and side skirts...

Plus there were two types of grills early face lift had the slats on the grill....the later 2005/2006 had the Gransport mess type....Although you could spec either.....Most have slats.....

I love red and lots do but not many buy them...........It does look good on a 4200 and GS though.................Most are blue/grey or black....these seem to be the most popular......

2005 Larger grill

2004 Smaller grill

Nothing visual I don't believe, all to do with making the car go as it was meant too.

I agree with Andy's overview about choice, price and model

Sounds like I should be aiming for 2004 onwards, that way I secure the gearbox/electrics upgrades.

I do prefer the facelift bumpers, and also the mesh grill

Thanks for your advice, much appreciated

If you find a 2005 face lift with a slat grill a mesh one is around £500 I believe........If you buy a 2003/2004 then a grill and bumper must be lots more.....Will take a punt at around £1500...

The 2003/2004 cars had anumber of upgrades....CC box etc..

The 2004/2005 had some of the Gransport upgrades and the body bits - I'm with you this is the one to have. The 2003/2004 cars are great mind you. All depends on if you life the clean early look or the GS front end look.

Thanks Andy for the pictures and Parisien for letting me know it shouldn't be a deal breaker as can be added.

One thing I want to be sure of is that if I stray into late2003 and early 2004 cars I get a car with skyhook suspension, upgraded CC gearbox etc.

Cheers for the early morning answers. I'm yet to get out of bed, do love the tablet PC!

If you fancy the car at Richard grace, I can say he's an honest guy & very good to deal with, he bought my GS MC Victory.

I also can recommend the GS with the F1 gearbox, fab car fantastic noise, only downside in my view is fuel consumption & tyres.

Enjoy, hope you get a good one.

I may be wrong but I think you can tell the difference from a 2002/2003 car to a 2003/2004 because the early car had a stubby black radio aerial on the back later upgraded cars did not have one.

Agree with andy on this.....

Id personally not buy a 4200 at 26k, dont beat me up people its just my opinion...

A 30k miler will suit the price better and get a lot of your money back as they have almost "bottomed" out....a GS will always be my pref anything over 20k.....

My personal opinion, and it is personal, is to go for the GranSport.

My personal reason for it is not one of performance as there is little or nothing in it.

The exhaust valve system, the wheels and the carbon fibre and seats coupled with the resale value. The GS is the final phase and IMHO its the best so will always command a premium and thus hold value and sell better.

To put it in to perspective, I drive a GTS, fabulous car, but it commands a lot of money and running costs for an occasional car and can quite see myself back in a GS in the near future.

A foot note to add, I would never have considered a yellow car ever, but after seeing Davis Howson's GS in Bristol Italian Day, I am swaying I loved it.

Agreed Dem, there was even a leggy one (mileage) on for just under £20k, the condition looked perfect though.

Sold my GS over a year ago for very late £20's and I recon its still worth the same today.

They will drop at some point but not far as you have the 32's and 42's propping them up.

In 3 years time I see cars starting at:
GTS £40-55k
GT £26-35k
GS £17-24k (GT forcing the price down a bit as I see the GT always commanding a small premium over the GS)
42 £9-14k
32 £5-9k (AC excluded) then I could see the 32 starting to rise from this floor - pristine examples

Lets come back in 3 years and see just how wrong I was!!!
