Can't you use a dial gauge to determine TDC?
Unfortunately they're probably also the people who scribe marks on the block when changing a cam belt. A dial gauge will be far more accurate given that piston stop may cover a larger arc on the crank than exact TDC.

when the piston is at top dead centre there is a 'dead' area where you can move the crank but the piston doesnt move

Hi, Any tips on removing and refitting the head, I need to replace a head gasket and am looking to do it with the engine insitu?finally managed to get one head off, been very busy recently!
as you can see, at least 14 valves are totaly bent!
the pistons look to have fared reasonably well, should be fine.
