Unfortunately they're probably also the people who scribe marks on the block when changing a cam belt. A dial gauge will be far more accurate given that piston stop may cover a larger arc on the crank than exact TDC.

yeah but i totally under stand why the don't like using a dial gauge, when the piston is at top dead centre there is a 'dead' area where you can move the crank but the piston doesnt move, hence using the 'piston stop' method will find the exact top dead center, i can try both methods anyway and see what i come up with :)

Beau,
Best of luck with her. The 3200 is a good car regardless of what some jealous members may say, they all lust after those rear boomerangs!!!!
It could have been that the cambelt had just been greatly overtightened, put stress on the water pump bearing and finally snapped. Shame about the top end, but at least they are fixable. Don't forget to check the end float whilst your at it.
Cheers

It only appears not to move if you are not using a dial gauge.

Piston stop tools are very primitive, used on Yank engines, which are also very primitive.

I think they cylinder numbers are marked on the engine casting if you look carefully - cant remember exactly where (but somewhere painted red judging by the vague image in my head!)

as you can see, at least 14 valves are totaly bent!

the pistons look to have fared reasonably well, should be fine.

Hi, Any tips on removing and refitting the head, I need to replace a head gasket and am looking to do it with the engine insitu?

Well I missed this first time round and having read the thread would love to know what the outcome was:
Q: was the crank bent?
