Why are we STILL letting people fly into Heathrow etc and not requiring them to self isolate? Some are coming in from New York, Italy and China for Christ's sake.

So an update to my post above, the presentation today same question asked, public health woman said we are monitoring it at sage.
What the heck, don't rush will you, it will be Christmas before you decide. If I can't go "out and about" in London or wherever, why should travellers?
We keep getting told that the quicker we all stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives, the quicker we will come out of isolation. Well these people ain't helping.

Also, apparently a lot of these are repatriation flights. Well if I had been abroad I would have known to get my *** home two MONTHS ago. So stay where you are now people, we don't want you here. Are you stupid?

Also, how come B&Q can open and sell plants but my local garden centre is banned?

That's all my rant out the way, time for a glass of wine!

Why can B&M open because they sell baked beans and crisps but everywhere else is closed , considering the government has since 1918 to plan for this it's a mess , you'd think this was the first pandemic ever

Trump confirms he's seen evidence that Covid originated in a Lab.

Seems my preferred news source was right again, weeks before any other.

We know some countries are starting to relax their lockdowns. Just as an example, this is the process just mapped out for Portugal starting from midnight Saturday. I appreciate, that it’s a different country with different demographics and has had a very low infection and mortality rate, but hopefully this is achieveable if the Portuguese respond to this in the same calm and considered what they have lived and worked within the restrictions so far. Here’s hoping the UK can adopt a similar, albeit possibly more extended, version of this in the too distant future.

“To this end, the State of Emergency ending at midnight on Saturday will morph into a State of Calamity – where people are still bound by restrictions and the need to keep as much to themselves as possible.

As to the ‘roadmap’, it begins on Monday May 4, with the reopening of:

  • Local commerce (small local shops and businesses, involving premises of less than 200 sq metres)
  • Bookshops and outlets dealing with the automobile industry
  • Hairdressers, barbers, beauty salons (manicure, pedicure, waxing etc) – by appointment only, and with clients using masks
  • Libraries, archives and parks
  • Public services: Finanças/ Conservatórios/ Social Security offices, again by appointment only and clients using masks
Also permitted from May 4 will be any kind of ‘individual sports’ practised in the open air. This particularly refers to surfing and body-boarding – activities that under the State of Emergency were expressly forbidden.

As has been previously explained, there will then follow a two-week period to assess whether the first steps cause too much of a spike in infections.

As the prime minister has continually stressed, there will inevitably be an increase in the risk of infections – it is simply up to everyone out and about using services and entering shops to maintain self-discipline and keep themselves and others as safe as humanly possible.

If all goes well, May 18 will see the reopening of:

  • Restaurants, cafés and pastelarias – albeit under strict regulations regarding hygiene and running at 50% capacity
  • Esplanades
  • Shops of up to 400 sq m
  • Museums, monuments, palaces, art galleries etc
  • Schools, again under strict rules of hygiene, for 11th and 12th year pupils taking national exams this year. The idea here is for pupils and teachers to wear masks at all times, and have timetables that run from 10am to 5pm, so as to reduce any pressure on public transports which are also running to strict regulations of social distancing and requiring all passengers to wear masks
  • Creches for those children whose parents feel comfortable enough for them to return to this social environment. Parents not comfortable will be able to continue looking after their children at home with the benefit of State support until the end of the month
Again, if DGS health authorities see no reason for concern, the final phase of reopening will take place on June 1, when shopping malls, cinemas and theatres, along with Citizens Bureaus (Lojas de Cidadão), creches, after hour tuition centres (ATLs) pre-school and all other business not already open will be able to return to business.

The final weekend of May has been scheduled for an end of restrictions on ‘religious gatherings’ and Premier League football games, to be played behind-closed-doors (ie still without fans in the stands).

These measures have taken weeks of discussions to chart and could be reversed at any point if infections spike alarmingly.”

State of calamity doesn’t translate well

When I see things like 'running at 50% capacity' all I see is loads of businesses going to the wall.

Lots of restaurants need 60-70% capacity to break even, most hotels need 40% occupancy to break even, so with 50% of the 100% open then that half the customers using the place which in turn will mean 20% of occupancy in hotels.

It'll end very badly imho.
