Why have we got a Government Minister saying the vaccine might not work with this new Covid variant ?
Just going to cause more panic especially amongst the elderly and non believers.

He was talking about the South African variant. The concerns centre around a change to the virus that may affect the way antibodies recognise it.

South African scientists published an article in The Scientist about it so it’s already public knowledge.

Ah they are starting to learn this hindsight way of thinking then ;)

No but it's a zero cost thing for them. Whatever they say they can either
  1. Claim their foresight saved the day
  2. Claim everything would have been so much better if only BJ had listened

(NB This would be the same no matter which part was in opposition)

So today London major Kahn is on telly talking about an emergency when 5 or 6 weeks ago he was on telly arguing about why London should be kept in tier 2, not moved to tier 3, after the November lockdown, so all the bars/resturaunts could stay open leading up to Xmas.

This is despite all the charts had the curve already heading up sharply in London.
I’m glad they kept the northwest in tier 3 even though at the same time the curve was heading down.....

What a tool.

Imagine the situation now, if that crazy 5 day Christmas party had not been cancelled. Even without any new variant it was not a sensible proposal by the Government, and certainty not based on any scientific advice.

And do those precautions not work? You have numbers to show this?
I'm being a bit harsh, but the numbers that do exist seem to show that hospitality had a very low impact on the numbers compared to anything else.

People in lockdown had something like 4 contacts per day
Key workers: 27. 19 of them 'close'

So.........

I don’t have any numbers, just from what I saw.Being in Tier 2 our town/village was stowed out with people from other areas, meeting for meals in the local hostelries. Our infection rates trebled In the weeks up to Xmas.
I’m a key worker, I’d say I have 4/5 contacts a day, not close, and they’re the same every day.
Out of work....0.

Friend and colleague who is in the highly clinically vulnerable category tested positive today and has already needed paramedics to check his oxygen levels and monitor his breathing.
It’s a real worry, mid 40’s, two young kids.

I could never fathom out the UK governments reluctance to insist that people wear masks, when the rest of the world were! Then they relented and joined in on recommending them, then later making it mandatory that “ face coverings” be worn in certain areas, not necessarily masks. Almost a year on I would not be surprised if they insist on masks being worn everywhere, even walking outdoors, yes, almost a year later, let’s see. They also went out of their way to make the general public embarrassed or guilty if they wore anything more than the basic surgical mask. Maybe that was due to the fact that at the time they were struggling with even providing adequate PPE to front line NHS. Now almost a year later, I will not be feeling guilty, nor should anyone else wearing an N 95 or N 99 mask, what ever keeps you safe. The Government has had long enough to ensure that by now NHS staff are provided with the best PPE. (Ha Ha). But tomorrow you will still see people in the supermarket with a rag wrapped around their face, just to meet the basic mandatory requirements, or as we have all seen prior to the lockdowns, pissing it up in the streets, or out shopping with no masks, or social distancing at all. Irrespective of which party is in control in the UK, their biggest enemy is the general public, and that is why lockdowns are necessary. Sorry, didn’t intend to making that into a rant.
