1000 deaths in the past 24hrs, highest daily rate since April - worse still to come I fear.

There is always winter pressure on hospitals and with Covid in the frame that was bound to accelerate, but a major factor in reported infections is increased testing - and I doubt that anyone knows how many carriers have been at large for the last 12 months. When the Covid panic set in last year there was considerable debate about transmission leading to herd immunity so, notwithstanding the vaccination programme, it will be interesting to see how that plays out in the coming months.

While it's tragic for those killed it still seems like a very low serious case rate,0.5%
80136

That still seems like a very low death rate

Isn't that 0.5% of current cases being serious? 3% of closed cases were closed due to death.

Id' be interested to see how the death rate is changing over time, i.e. is the % of cases leading directly to death reducing due to improved understanding and treatment of CV?

I wonder what the ratio is of deaths 'from Covid' as opposed to those 'with Covid'.

Interesting indeed, but never going to be a simple answer.

Excess deaths is probably the best measure of the impact it's had.

On a lighter note, our granddaughter went into self isolation ten days ago, then went for a Covid test, just so that she could come around to our house for a cuddle. Bless her, what a lovely thing to do. After having the test she insisted in staying in her room and told her mum to leave her food outside her bedroom door. As soon as the negative result came through around she came. Maybe a little overboard you might think, but does show that some, probably a lot, of the younger generation are sensible and responsible. And still need a cuddle from their Granparents!

Surely not that responsible as she’s not allowed to do that ;)

I’ll get my coat and pedant hat which way is the door.

What a shame, when I was writing the above I honestly wondered if anyone would respond with that reply. Just thought it was better than keeping a record of the daily deaths, don’t get me wrong, you are correct in what you say!

I work in an industry where you don’t break rules. If you break rules you get killed. It’s just the mindset that’s been indoctrinated into us over many years.

It’s been quite noticeable the difference in attitude between my colleagues and my family/friends throughout this. Everyone at work follows the rules everyone else seems to be “selective”

Well if you are going to break the rules, do it sensibly, that’s what I say !

My other half and I don't live together, but meet every weekend, she messaged tonight asking if we were allowed to see each other still, I said technically not, she replied 'so were not going to see each other for 7 weeks?' I was halfway through typing 'every cloud has a silver lining' when discretion got the better part of valour! :lol2:

Ok I understand, I really do. It can’t be much fun being indoctrinated. I will make sure she never does it again, sorry.
