But the overwhelming weight of EVIDENCE in large cohorts over long time in reputable journals in different countries shows a J-shape curve between BMI and all-cause mortality.

I'll (try to) be clear. Totally support BMI as a measure. However most don't need BMI yet. Once they get to within a stone or so of a sensible weight, then BMI becomes a useful metric.

It can be de-motivating for someone that thinks they need to lose a few pounds to do a BMI calculation and find they actually need to lose a few stone (or KG). When I started losing weight I actually thought that if I lost more than a couple of stone I'd look too skinny. I actually needed to lose ten stone. If someone had said 'you won't be a good weight until you lose 140lbs' that would not have helped me.

I'm happy that people (two years in a row) are looking to make lasting changes that result in consistent reduction in weight. Newton is the shining example, but we have several other re-visitors.

I personally will be targeting a green BMI at this point but lots and lots of people struggle to even understand that I'm carrying too much fat.....

I find the reference to Fred Flintstone slightly condescending, and can‘t see what possible difference it makes what units people use to measure themselves in...

I agree with C that I don’t need a BMI calculation to tell me I’m fat and that I need to loose weight - the harsh reality is I can see that just by looking down, or by judging how my clothes fit me (or don’t)… the fact I need to lose 55 lbs (25kgs) to have a BMI in the middle of the 20-25 recommended range is irrelevant and utterly unachievable.

I agree that weight in itself is a bit of a blunt instrument, but it serves a purpose as a proxy given where I’m at right now... having said that, if I was going to try and be a bit more focussed, I’d probably use something like body fat %age, or level of visceral fat, rather than an outdated, pre-historic “Barney Rubble-esque” measure such as BMI ;).

Agree with C on the BMI thing,
As He said some elite athlete will be along....
I think that when I joined the forces I was in the green for the 1st 4 years, after that I was in the overweight (think Amber) part for the next 18 years. I never quite got to the obese part (red), all though was close on my diving medical. I’ve just checked the chart. Yep. I’m still overweight and to be healthy I need to get to my forces joining weight of 68kg.Hmm.

We all recognise we have a problem and we are all willing to try and take some action to address - that in itself is positive. We each do our own thing our own way and we post our results whatever they are - then comes the power of the group, support, praise, encouragement that's all we need , not loads of stats or big words just help from are like minded friends.

Very well said Andy.
It's all down to friendship and support to getting ourselves where want to be.
A bit like going to Alcoholics Anonymous I will start.
My name's Phil and I eat too much.

I am probably at my peak in terms of looks/fitness. Currently age 26 and I like going to the gym & playing football. 6ft 2 90kg at the moment. I need to cut to 85kg to get the mid section waist/stomach section better for 2020 so thats my goal. My current shape below.

We'll done all, loving the enthusiasm. As mentioned by Andy, we're here to support, not dictate.

I'll remain on the fringes again this year but am trying to shift some weight and gain some fitness.

I'm going to start with doing 4 X 25 squats every day. So a 100 squat a day challenge. Shouldn't require a huge commitment. As well as trying to eat a little better!

This thread is usually pretty good for ideas, so keep them coming of what and how everyone is intending to lose weight. There's certainly not a one size fits all solution when it comes t losing weight.

I’m not sure I agree with the fasting thing.
I’ve never dieted, guess I have never had too, tho I’m getting the middle age spread thing.
I prefer to eat sensibly and exercise a bit more. I will not leave the house without breakfast, 2 weetabix every morning at 06:30 during the week, I have 2 to 3 pieces of fruit during the generally a sandwich or soup for lunch, them my main meal when I get in.
Weekends it goes to rat sh1t, beer, wine, eating out, bbq’s etc.
I think I just need to exercise more, which basically means doing something.
2 1hr rides in 3 days is a start I guess.
The reason I like the fasting thing is twofold.
Firstly it sets a disciplined routine that after 1900 there's no consumption.....which is brilliant for me with wine and snacking boredom/addictions.
Secondly I do think it works for me in terms of results and I find it relatively easy to stick to as the majority of it I sleep through..
Horses for courses though.

Morning,

Faced off to the scales this morning

208.8lbs and 18.5% fat

Which actually is better than it was when I came back from Cancun. A chunk of that will vanish in a couple of days then the harder bit will start.

Well done all!

When do you start eating again, Wattie?

Ok - I was clearly grumpy (and tired) last night, and I’m man enough to to admit I over-reacted! apologies to all, and especially @cheshiremaserati…

I agree that the power of this thread (and the one last year) was the positivity and encouragement, which then led (at least for me) to a form of positive peer pressure. In this vein, I quite like Wattie’s suggestion of a cut-off in the evening beyond which there’s no consumption... I think that could help me, so will have a think about how I could factor that in.

Just weighed myself and for approximately the 30th year in a row I start the year at 110kg. The difference being that all those years ago I was an elite athlete, and now I’m not. So the weight I carry now isn’t the muscle it used to be. It’s about time I reduced my weight to one more appropriate to my current requirements. A first target weight of 100kg by the early summer seems sensible.

When I saw this thread, I thought someone had just changed the title of last years one!

The BMI this is just rubbish, it's an 'average', average doesn't take into consideration the various shapes and sizes.
At 26 when I played semi pro football, was fit as a fiddle, played football 5 times a week and went to the gym 4 to 5 times I was classed just a % or 2 below being morbidly obese when I had never been in better shape. (obviously that's a long time ago now- 20 years!)

My plan to lose the excess timber this year is to do more cycling, went out on my bike on the 30th December and did a quick 18.5 miles and was surprised that I wasn't blowing out of my ar5e!
However, I am nowhere near where I was before I was in hospital in September.

I'm doing the Loch Ness Etape in April (a hilly 66 miles) so will need to get my fitness levels up quite a bit, but what it does mean is that cycling training starts, er now, as opposed to April when I would normally start.

As for drinking and eating less, I doubt that will happen, the way at I look at it is if you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight.
Just need to do more exercise.
