Adam there's an art to buying a car with a folding wedge , not trying to teach you suck eggs , for example if the car is advertised say for £2500 , do the normal thorough checks , tyres (dont kickem just check the tread) ) under the bonnet for cleanliness , no oil leaks etc , test drive it , check the brakes and suspension when braking etc dont let on you like what you see, say you have already seen one a year newer for less money but with a few more miles , worth having a cheeky bid , before you go stick £2K in readies in one pocket and lots of £100 in other pockets , make your cheeky bid of £2K , tellem you have the money on you and are prepared to do the deal now , then get the money out and make it plain for them to see , if they dither and say no , look to your Dad or your mate and say shall we go and get the other one then , and just turn slightly to walk away , ..............you will be surprised how often this works , its coming up to xmas and they want your cash ...... this really does work in that price range of cars when buying private but not to dealers

If you really want it you can always turn round and add a couple of hundred to your offer ....... remember you can always go up so start low

regards loz

I will be going with my dad and be checking everything you mentioned Loz, the service history is the most important, i will not be looking at a car unless it has a full service history. I wont be paying cash, will pay cheque.

Only going by what my dad has said, he will be in charge of payment method, personally cash is easier and i will be buying from a dealer.

Lots of dealers don't like cash these days...?.......If private def cash as its amazing what the colour of money will do when buying...Unless you are buying a car for 50k then that would be alot to carry.

Well i went and had a look at an 05 plate SportKA yesterday, 30k miles FSH etc....... but there was early signs of rust around the fuel filler cap, what i was very surprised about is you can actually put your arm under the wheel arch and feel where the water sits behind the fuel filler. I am looking at a grey one on Saturday at a dealer which is described as MINT !!!. The rust problem is an issue that is worrying me because if i buy one without rust, it is bound to start rusting in the near future, i wonder what can be done to prevent the rust happening.

Try waxoyl Adam...have a google, plenty of info out there on it...sure there are others, but this has been around for years.

Yes i was thinking that.

I will have a good look at the left wheel arch on Saturday, i was thinking would it be possible to line the wheel arch with a very thin flexible sheet of perspex preventing water hitting the area where the fuel filler is??

When you had the Alfa, did you have to waxoyl it often?

Once rust is there Adam, you won't get rid of it, move on I recon.

What are the list of cars you are gunning for, don't fancy anything Italian?

Would say that you should try to avoid putting anything there that is likely to trap water/moisture...
if you can get behind the panel, you could use the sprayer kit (check ebay) to spray the waxoyl in there.

Never did the Alfa...Gulia never got wet in 10 years of my ownership...she was even cleaned without water!

That's the point Matt...Adam has seen where they are prone to rust, so if he can get a mint one and prevent it rusting he will be happy :D

Nothing Italian no, wanted a Panda 100HP originally as they were cheap on insurance but they still fetch 4k which is too expensive, not fussed on anything else from Italy.

shortlist is.......

Ford SportKA
Toyota Yaris SR (2001)
Polo 1.4
Citroen C2 VTR.
