3200- broken down

hi,

this is my first actual break down! (previous issues have occurred during it being parked up)

so I was driving along, and the engine died.

turns over but wont fire up, got fuel ok.

I cant remember what stays on when the ignition is turned on, but when I turn on the ignition, code, error, check engine & slow down all stay lit up, I know code used to go off, cant remember about the others.

also the engine cooling fans are on constantly (this is only since removing and reconnecting the battery) now I have had to disconnect the battery cos the fans just stay on the whole time.

any ideas?

Maybe check MAF sensor, faulty one used to keep the fans running on my volvo, I know not the same but possibly a quick check.

Get it to a mechanic.....can it be serious?
It could be the car having an off day

No it wont! I'm still watching for water in my oil (non seen as yet) but in the meantime i'll read all these horror stories about unassociated horrors inflicted on our long-suffering colleagues. This one sounds a bit like an electrical short somewhere which is a bit of a change from metal bits playing up. Sorry I can't be of any greater assistance Beau, so I wish you good luck and I'll watch as this saga unfolds.

Well Beau you will sort it out as your more engineering than most of us.

Forvitvto die like that it sounds battery connected to me, check the main power lines from the battery all the way to the engine.

Code tea is the obvious next step but you could find its just the TDC sensor.

I know from talking to you at Ace you have been having starting issues that points to this and I am sure its all related.

Its cheap and easy to change.

As worst case it could be the ECU as this controls everything inc the fans but I do think your problem is battery or sensor problem.

On startup the engine will always turn if it has enough power. It needs permission to start from the ECU so there lies your issue.

Just one final thing which I am sure you would not of overlooked, you do have compression and the engine is not turning faster than normal on the starter? That would be the cambelt.

Beau , first fully charge your battery , If your cooling fans are on as your trying to start the car there is not enough power to start the car .

If that is what is happening to your car , disconnect your fans and then see if your car will start .

If it starts then you will have to look at the cooling fans and see why there on all the time

If you need any help please call me .

ok, it says in the manual if the code light is on then the car will not start.

in the emergency start procedure it says the check engine light will come on and go off after 4 seconds then come back on, mine just stays on, so i cant do the emergency start...

i put a new tdc sensor & disconnected the fans but still didnt start, but that was an obvious one lol, cos there must be an issue with the fans staying on, check engine staying on, and the code light staying on!!!??? what to do!?

The key code is the immobiliser; try another key?

Check engine needs either a dealer/Indy OR the cables and software we have been using - cheap off of eBay and if you source from the UK you'll have them in under a week.

Sounds stupid but have you checked all the fuses?

No i haven't checked fuses, that is a good idea... Iv tried the red key and code still stays on

I have seen the code light thing several times before. Locking and then unlocking the car usually sorts it or try another key as per above.

Yeah I have tried, battery disconnected for days, locked unlocked, tried both keys etc

Have a look at the induction coil and plug around the lock cylinder. I've heard of people having the key code problem when the plug gets oxidised because the coil doesn't power up the RFID tag in the key.
