3200 GTA - potential gearbox issue

Just got the car back from my Indy (PK Supercars) and thought it might be worth mentioning this issue for others with an auto 3200. Apologies if this has ben mentioned before on another thread.

Here is the vaguely technical piece : While carrying out the annual service a leak was identified from the rear gearbox tailshaft seal and there was found to be play in the bearing. Once the exhaust and propshaft were removed to gain access to the tailshaft, the shaft retaining nut was also found to be loose and could be removed by hand. Phil at PK advised that he has seen one 3200 with this problem already which had gone unattended by an owner until it was too late - the bearing and seal gave up the ghost completely in that instance resulting in enough vibration in the driveline to crack the gearbox casing and resulting in a replacement 'box being required. Mine is all back together and in good health as it was caught early but might be worth others bearing this in mind (pardon the pun) !

Even if everything is fit tightly, the shaft feels quite sloppy.
There is quite a lot of play between the shaft and the needlebearing that supports it.
The oilseal has to do quite some work, preventing oil to come out.

The previous owner of my 3200 GTA told me that he also had the retaining nut come loose, fortunately only the rear seal required replacing, but there was a lot of work to get to it.

Better add this to my list of things to look at. any guidance on whether this was improved with the facelift in 2001 (i have one of the modified ones with OBDII etc). I am just hoping! since i do not have any oil leaks around this area.

Davy,

Mine is a 2001 Assetto Corsa with OBDII so I suspect they are all the same in this respect...I should add mine has done under 52k so not a high mileage related issue.

Interesting.... mine is also a 2001 OBDII model and the problem occurred at 30K miles, maybe a bad batch of gearboxes?
