3200 Oil Pressure Sender

My understanding of the available ranges is that the Alfa / Lancia units are 240-33 ohm. The gauge only goes to 5 bar so the crucial question is whether 240 ohms reads as 0 on the gauge.

Get a 240 ohm resistor and connect it across the sender terminals?

To test this a bit further I bought a cheap 8 bar oil pressure sender 0-300 ohm for Fiat 132. Got one really cheap for Lada 1600 as this corresponds to the Fiat unit.

Rigged it up for measuring and these are the values :

0 bar - 310 ohm
1 bar - 240 ohm
2 bar - 190 ohm
3 bar - 147 ohm
4 bar - 121 ohm
6 bar - 53 ohm

Sadly the rig could not go higher but it decreases nicely, although a bit uneven,so about 0 ohm at 8 bar is reasonable to assume.

This is as mentioned a 0-300 ohm - 8 bar - M14x1,5 sender unit. Using the part nr. in cross reference lists show Facet 7.0600 - Vemo V24-72-0116 - FAE 14530 - HAVAM 1.800.600 - Lada 3810300-01 as replacement parts if we could live with a 300 ohm unit instead of the aprox.280 ohm measured in the Jaeger unit. These numbers again corresponds to many Fiat/Alfa Romeo units so availabillity is good.

This will give a small misreading on the instrument but nothing that would be regarded as false and wrong readings. When Allan measures the original one we would know for sure how close these units are.

Chaps.. how are we doing on this?

Just ordering all the bits to do the cambelt on mine and was going to replace the oil pressure sender at the same time... and they are no longer available!... so time to find an alternative solution..

Cheers

Readings as promised, sorry they took so long.

0 Bar - 270 ohms
2 Bar- 183 ohms
4 Bar - 114 ohms
6 Bar - 61 ohms
8 Bar - 20 ohms.

I only had use of a 3" pressure gauge so accuracy at the points may be suspect, but it gives a ballpark set of readings. I will take it back to work with me and test it properly and hopefully have a more accurate set of figures.

Then the original one sure has quite equal figures to the Fiat unit :

0 bar - 310 ohm
1 bar - 240 ohm
2 bar - 190 ohm
3 bar - 147 ohm
4 bar - 121 ohm
6 bar - 53 ohm

Mind you, this is a 8 bar unit but the test-rig didn't go higher than 6 bar.

If the difference in resistance is about 7% a 4 bar oil pressure would read about 3,75 on the cars instrument using the Fiat sender. Not 100% perfect but who's to say they were perfect to begin with :)

Agree, and the car has a 2" Gauge. at the end of the day you want to see a trend or a marked difference. Or zero oil pressure! remember the original gauge only read to 5B or hard upscale anyway.

I could live fine with a 6-7% misreading.

Fiat/Lancia : 4151997 - 82387178 - 026991 - 82374407
Alfa Romeo : 530 617 - 60535988 - 60537246
Magneti Marelli : 116451079902 - 116451279901 - 116451059901

These would again cross over to lots of other sender units. So it's fair to say availability is good and prices very reasonable. But before ordering it would be wise to ensure it is a M14x1.5

Just so people don't get confused, the earlier mentioned senders should all be M14x1.5. I personally bought a unit for Lada 2103-3810300-01 for £10,this again corresponds directly to a Fiat 132 sender, 0-8bar, M14x1.5

Not sure if you have these figures but the maserati service manual give the sensor readings as follows;

0 bar 305 Ohms
0.4 bar 270
2 bar 190
4 bar 118
6 bar 65
8 bar 0 to 40

All ohm plus or minus 15%

Apart from zero, mine is pretty much spot on, pity it bounced all over the place due to the cheap and nasty method of connecting it.

Thanks Rex. Your numbers are great for comparison. I will buy another sender for testing, this time italian made from Fiat/Lancia. Just to see if there is some consistency between these units. They should be equal according to cross ref. lists but better be safe than sorry...

Excellent work guys.

As my cambelt is due to be in done in the next couple of weeks I shall go ahead and get one of these pressure senders and report back in due course!....

Cheers

Ok.. following on from this I ordered myself a FAE 14530.

The thread may be correct. But the unit itself is much larger than the standard Maserati part and it won't fit with all the ancillary pipework in the way. Drat.

So has anybody managed to fit an alternative pressure sender to the their car? If so which one?

Is it the diameter that is the problem or the length? The FAE sender looks to be quite wide, the senders I have here are 40mm in diameter, would they fit better?

Zep,

Yeah it's the diameter. Just measured this one and it's 40mm (ish). At a guess the Maserati one is about 25mm in diameter.. much slimmer...

Bummer . The only other option would be an adapter, would it fit if it was fitted at an angle, say 45 or 90 degrees?
