4200 Primary/Secondary Cat Replacements

Hi All,

Looking at de-catting my primaries and replacing my secondary cats with 200 cell sports cats (longlife), has anyone else had experience with this type of job, or just replacing the secondary's, I don't want to spend thousands but just want a little more noise/power.

My reason for doing this is that I'm having some tinny sputtering in the exhaust on deceleration so I'm guessing the cats are on there way out (originals still in MY 2002).

Regards

Hi Kyle

This topic has been thoroughly dicussed recently, probably not the first or last time lol... These threads will be useful: Geoff's rollercoaster break down which was down to the cats giving up lots of dicussion here http://www.sportsmaserati.co.uk/showthread.php/20713-Broken-Down?highlight=broken and Maverick's custom sports cats http://www.sportsmaserati.co.uk/showthread.php/19734-My-new-sports-cats?highlight=sports+cats

The expensive option is Larini (£1500+) or go to an exhaust fabricator who has some experience with these cars (or the forum cats) for £550 - £650

I'm probably going to take the plunge in a couple of months to get rid of the old ceramic cats which can ruin your engine when they fail for the 200 cell sports cat

I've decided to go with the Primary Cat Delete, my drivers side cat had broken down and ended up clogging the secondary cat, so I'm also having my secondaries replaced with 200 cell sport cats, all in for £550.00 (longlife exhaust).

That's what I had done. You'll probably need a flange made to fit if you're not having Maserati squashed cats.
Sparticus has some (unless he's sold them).
Unless of course your fabricator is doing all that.

It will make a massive difference to the sound, and will be much louder.
What other exhaust mods do you have?

Hi Geoff,

I think they are keeping the squished pipe under the steering rack, just gutting the remaining good primary and swapping the secondaries, I'm pretty sure it's all stock other than that mate, it's on a 2002 plate so i wasn't too concerned as I'm sure 14 year old cats will eventually fail, maybe the ignition coil I replaced a while back was the main issue, was causing a misfire which I guess was spraying the primary (drivers) with fuel.

I was looking to do this too at some point in the summer - would there be any issues with the lambda sensors after the primary cats if you have them removed??

you just stick them back in where they were even if the cat is not there . They take a before and after reading once the gases have gone through the cat /cats

I replaced my secondary cats and resonator with a custom x-pipe which seemed a pretty easy solution, wasn't expensive and made a good difference to the noise, and I think made it rev a bit more freely but can't be sure

I am considering removing the primary cats post GC issue but am not over keen on going down the asbo exhaust route, I like the sound I currently have. Might have to do some research

Removing the cat s wont gain much volume if you have some baffeling in the exhaust somewhere . You could always remove a set of cats and replace them with free flowing silencers to keep the noise down ......Or you could grow a pair :p

Unlike some I don't have a big bit of tin and glass to subdue the sound and I am less shouty shouty than some ;)

I should get it back tomorrow so I'll see what it sounds like, probably no volume gain just a little more raspy - as with the o2 sensors, I already had 1 primary fail and disappear it seems and I had no engine light come up so it must be fine.

Had my car back now for a week and it's safe to say everything is all good on the exhaust side, now my RH bank is clear I'm having no engine trouble (judder, rattling noises etc), it was confirmed that my RH primary cat had completely broke up and was half wedged into the RH secondary, so I decided to gut the 'good' LH primary to match then replaced both secondaries with 200-Cell sport cat - now on to the X-Pipe!! Where's BennyD at?

*I did have a check engine light come up after a few runs - I've now ordered a o2 fooler to sort out the cat codes.

You may find that the ecu just needs to re-learn the different speeds & temperatures of the exhaust gases now that the 200 cell cats are doing their magic. Try a 20 minute battery re-set and then go out for a real, proper thrash for at least half an hour to get everything running super hot and it may well fix it. This is what I had to do after my sports cats were fitted on the advise of Larini and once I did this, it has never re-occurred.

I'll give that a try this weekend then, it only came up the once to be honest after numerous runs/starts/stops - I was trying to see if my old problem of 6th Gear, Low Revs - full throttle was dragging like it did when I had a clogged exhaust was gone, which I'm happy to say it is, not long after trying this it came up LH & RH banks cats temp below min threshold.

Sounds like exactly what I had.

I've got a H pipe on mine, it is LOUD!!!!
X pipe may be the more socially acceptable option.
