Following up on my thread where I challenged the forum to help me pick a replacement daily as my Mercedes CLS 350Cdi Brabus was getting a little long in the tooth.

The front runner was a Porsche Panamera mk1 and the challenge was to convince me to buy a Maserati (or other manufacturers)

@outrun suggested either a Macan or a BMW Alpina of any description. Luckily there is little desire for a SUV in my household but my wife and I had both grown up in areas where boy racers put Alpina rims on their bottom of the range 90s BMWs and that in put Alpina on the radar an aspirational brand for us growing up... Although I was set on not buying another BMW I would make an exception for an Alpina

So here it is... BMW Alpina F10 D5 Bi-Turbo #137

81612

It had 40,500 miles and a lot of options a few to note are:
Nappa leather
Limited slip differential
Heads up display
Sports steering wheel

This car was originally for sale privately for £20k and Sytner bought it and marked it up. I was quite fortunate that the info on the prep work was shared with me and it totalled £2750 with no labour charge included on the internal invoice. Plus the after sales rectification costs I think we got a good deal buying it through the Alpina main dealer

The only option we added to the car was the silver Alpina decals. The Salesman was good he mentioned that they only cost £275 to supply and fit just as we agreed the deal and were about to leave... I said that I don't really care for them and my wife just walks off and pays for them with her card lol

The Salesman made sure that the job was done correctly and prior to the decals being installed got their body shop to machine polish the entire car

Before decals
81619

After decals
81620

On collection day with our old Merc next to it

8161681614

8161781615

I had the car inspected by AV Engineering just over a week after purchase. AV found a busted rear differential bushing - other than that the car is in very good health underneath

81613
81618

I found some other problems, a slow lock actuator on the drivers door, the same door card is rattling and I also found a couple of rust spots on the inner front right wheel arch caused by where the previous owner had never cleaned inside the arches - they were caked with mud and grit

Sytner have agreed to fix the issues and took the car away last Wednesday and left me with a brand new manual 218d which is a little slow for my taste but I admit it is fun to rag it to the shops and back.

The D5 is a great car, absolute monster on the straights and I am a little scared to see how it handles as the Pirelli summer tyres do not really work at the moment but it feels nimble and super grippy...

Pretty sure it will be faster than the 4200 so I am not looking forward to my wife looking smug when we take both cars out when the salt clears up in Spring

Couple of photos of the 2 series they gave me... This would be a real hoot with some additional power (218d has ~140hp I think at least an extra 40 is needed). It is fun around roundabouts and very short blasts but struggles to get around Vauxhalls on the dual carriageway this is where it really starts to fall apart

Lovely car. Did you look at in the flesh or test drive any panameras. I’m going to replace my BMW 650 this year and the 4.8 4s is on my list.

I have sat in a few and they are very nice inside. I do still want to drive one to see what they are like practically. On paper I am only put off by how wide they are.

Should be the 240i, with an extra 200 BHP!

The 240i would need the optional LSD or it would not be so fun in the corners with all that power and an open diff - it is what i hated about my E46 330i and E90 335i

Its why I said 180hp would probably be enough without needing to stiffen/improve the chasis and drive train... You can drive it around on the limit nearly all the time and it will have enough guff to overtake a Vauxhall on the dual carriageway lol

Thanks guys

Had an update from the dealership yesterday who confirmed the rear diff bushing and flex coupler have been replaced

Lock actuator has been fixed while the rattle from the same door card they claim that they cannot hear I am hoping that by removing and reinstalling the door card it has been eradicated. Now it is going to their body shop to have the rust spots inside the wheel arch sorted

Looking forward to getting it back until then I can only rewatch the Alpina D5 promo video on youtube

I am biased of course but what a lovely looking car. Great colour for an F10. I did my best to make mine look like an everyday hack 81734diesel too..

Guess who's back?

Sytner replaced the bush & flex coupler plus the faulty door lock actuator as mention above

They fell short of rectifying the small rust bubble on the wheel arch stating that it was caused by a stone chip hence not covered under BMWs 12 year corrosion warranty... They had the car for nearly 2 weeks and I just wanted it back... They said that the next step is to arrange someone to deliver it back to Hampshire and pick up the 2 series I replied "no thanks" and drove up the Nottingham the following day to collect the car. Glad it is home now... Next step is new rear brake pads

If you ever need anything major replaced, call an Alpina dealer in Holland/Belgium/Germany for parts costs.
I had to replace the supercharger on my B5, Sytner wanted £4500 for it. I ordered it from a BMW main dealer in Holland for £2500. Same part, comes directly from Alpina.
I questioned this price difference with my contact at Alpina HQ. Apparently it’s out of their control what percentage increase BMW UK decides to place on parts.. as it turns out near 100% in this case. It’s the same for discs and pads on a B5.. nearly double the price compared with our continental cousins!
