curve of the 6 was cut off
Lol... yeah I guess someone did... although most people familiar with the buying of private plates know that dvla hold back any plate that is of any worth or reads favourably for a motoring enthusiast and then auction them separately so they don’t fall within the £250 a plate bracket... lol... but hey what do I know i’ve only every bought like 15 different plates in the past so my experience is probably limited compared to most on this forum
Lol... love that’s it has piqued some interest even if not the buying kind.
Regards the points raised.. it’s not a show plate, genuine plate from ‘plate factory’, and secondly it is not a lower case b, it is a 6 the only thing is that the curve of the 6 was cut off, the plate is not printed it is made from carbon gel lettering and therefore the 6 was put into position and the slight curve at the top was cut of with a Stanley knife. Still a 6.
Plate has been on the car for over a year, car is in daily use not just a weekend car and have never been pulled once for the plate.
Sorry there's mo way that 6 is legal for a number plate, otherwise I'd make my S555 SVK into SSSS SVK or 5555 5VK!For those who asked about the legality of the number 6... please note that the guidance issued by the government for plates after 2001 is as follows:
characters must be 79mm tall
• characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 50mm wide
• the character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 14mm
• the space between characters must be 11mm
• the space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 33mm
• the margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 11mm
• vertical space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 19mm.
The plate meets these requirements so therefore is perfectly legal and given the format is post 2001 the police will not be questioning wether it is GH16 lol as that it is all it can be.
Markings are present on the plate, but are hidden by the black holder hence why you may be making an assumption to their absence because you can’t see them.
Hope that addresses that question. Class dismissed.
Agreed. And in the grand scheme of things if the plate falls foul of the above (the spirit of which is about misrepresenting the plate) this does so in such a minor way that the infringement is trivial. Thanks for the info Ghostrider, however, the following rules also apply
General rules for displaying number plates
The law states that you must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers on number plates. Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).
Offences may result in any or all of the following:
- A fine of up to £1,000
- The registration mark being withdrawn
- The vehicle failing its MOT
Lol from the sublime often to the ridiculous... ur plate would be illegal because the s is now 5 and in both the above scenarios creates a clear misrepresentation.. my six is still a six and still wants to be a six Infact it takes offence at anybody not thinking it’s a six and would write a letter of complaint to anybody who questions otherwise...Think it's still illegal though, and can't see the postcode of the plate maker and the BS number.
Reminds me of texting in Cyrillic with Latin charset, 6 for Russian

I remember reading an auto book in 70's/80's showed pics of car with Roman numerals on the number plates, and I still don't thing that's actually illegal. Presumably 'Latin' must include 'Roman'Agreed. And in the grand scheme of things if the plate falls foul of the above (the spirit of which is about misrepresenting the plate) this does so in such a minor way that the infringement is trivial.
Although I also accept thatold idiom of each to his own and accept that different people will have different tolerances for risk and appetites for risk aversion will also vary.
My Academic background and career are both in Law so I tend to be ok accepting this given the bigger and wider issues at play around us

In anycase this has become far more then I would have liked to talk about a letter on a number plate. The police care less then the people on this forum. What fine upstanding citizens we all are. So I thank everybody for their Sunday afternoon interest, for the riveting conversation on the vagaries of number plate lettering and bid you adieu.
Have a wonderful evening all.
No, your '6' is actually a 'b' no matter how you want to dress it up.
Naturally you (Ghostrider) are simply selling GH16 LII, it's then up to the new owner to decide whether they wish to break the law and display it as shown on your car, most reputable number plate manufacturers will make the plate up as a show plate and with no BS numbers as it is not legal.
So is the plate on a retention certificate now?
Lol cool, you have me against the wall, your words rapier sharp pressed against my rib and I yield. That 6 good sir is a b... please spare my life if not my 6.
Crikey you've taken a **** of a roasting haven't you. If somebody wants to buy your plate then fair play to them. The onlt risk is if Mr Plod is bored one day they will run the risk of BennyD style Tutting, but it's not the most heinous crime out there. I hope you find a good home for the plate and maybe get a good price for it. I also hope you don't get put off the forum which is usually a much friendlier place.Lol Ok my typing and grammar is now suffering... enjoy your evening folks ...
