Evening lady’s & gents, I’m new to the forum and it’s a pleasure to be on here! I’m in need of some advice, I’m looking to purchase my first Maserati.

Today I went and test drove an 09 Qpv facelift 4.2. She drove ok but she really only started to talk to me when I opened her up circa 3k rmp (My 640i sounded more beefy driving around Lower rpms in sport) however she does sound better driven in sport, it’s a lovely colour combo blue/sand interior..now I have some questions.

1. I assume this has been discussed a trillion times but is it worth me waiting and paying an additional £10k+ for the 4.7s version, is there a major difference in sound and performance?

2. do I remap which will sound similar to 4.7?

3. is 09 a good year for the face lift 4.2? I’m aware early facelifts were more prone to variator and suspension issues (this model I viewed needs new front bushes)

4. The whole subframe has been under sealed from the previous owner (the pre work pictures looked horrific with the rust) is this common and any prevention to stop the rust?

Cheers and I look forward to hearing responses

Forza Maserati

Morning Dom and welcome to the forum.

I can’t stress enough your need to have the car independently inspected prior to purchase. There are good cars and also some very poor cars out there that will end up costing you a fortune to put right.

The 4.7 is a much better car and in my opinion worth every penny of the extra money.

The QP does seem to suffer from a host of electrical issues that are time consuming and thus expensive to put right.

The GranTurismo is built on the same chassis but also an ironed out version of the QP

Also an 09 car is on the cusp of the variator issue that needs to be checked. There is a chassis number that someone else will reveal that had this variatir issue fixed

All the best and good luck in your search.

Welcome Dom,

The engine number after which the variator issue is 148607. The engine number might be on the V5 or stamped on the bottom of the block next to the exhaust. Another way of identifying affected cars is the assembly number, with cars after 48976 not affected.

For my pennies worth, the 4.7 is worth it, but try both because you might feel differently.

What has been said above.

Also a remap will do very little to the sound of a 4.2.
One other thing. Why would you drive a Maserati when it isn’t in Sport????

Get that rusty underside checked properly - they rust from the inside so they can look fab but have the rigidity of wet cardboard.

Welcome Dom.
I had a 4.7 and it was fantastic and the noise can be improved on, on both that's for sure. Not looked at price differences lately but my 09 sold in June privately with 37k miles for 18k as I needed to make way for the newbie.

Posting the car or registration may help as some of the knowledgeable on here may recognise it. There was a blue 09 floating around with a Swiss cheese subframe from memory although I think someone said it had been replaced.

Hi Dom and welcome to the forum - is this the QP you test drove....?

I am pretty sure that might be the one. It was on a private plate and had some sort of motorsport link.
Trying to find the original post.
I could be completely wrong though.

If the ten grand extra is "no issue" then carry on looking. FWIW my 4.2 QP has been in the family for 7 years and only ever "think I need more" after meeting up with folks from here.

The QPV is at the stage where you buy on in condition NOT spec. Something like a 911 circa year 2000 (Advice from Henry at 911virgin).

As clearly advised by Matt (conaero) do get PPI unless you have good mechanical skills. No amount of underseal can insulate buyer from £5000 worth of replace/repair.
Welcome!

(this model I viewed needs new front bushes). --> far from a deal breaker, you can negotiate this off the price. Mine were replaced at reasonable cost by "the owner".

No intention to dissuade your purchase, just keeping you safe. The wrong car could have 'repair costs' exceeding purchase price. Any pre-facelift QPV is one minor car park ding from being cat D "write-off" (to insurer)

only two 4.7 on Auto Trader and £24 or £30k so quite the premium for the extra half litre.

This 09 blue 4.2 with light interior looks nice

The 4.7 S at £24k (X99DLH) has been on sale at the same dealer for ages; I think the owners use it. In Aug 2018 it was £28k at 48,616 and in Apr 2021 it was £23k at 54,166 and has only done 55 miles since then. But is a 2011 car. I would say overpriced by about £5k.

The Bianco Fuji one is wildly over-priced for high-ish miles 2009 car.

I had a 2009 4.2 and upgraded to a 2009 4.7 S (was really looking for a 2011 car) in April this year. Not really necessary, but glad I did.

A facelift 2009 4.7 S should not be that much more expensive to buy than an equivalent 4.2 - maybe £5k, not £10k - and the ones currently on Autotrader seem overpriced. I bought a very similar 4.7 S in blue/avorio privately for about what you are being asked for for this one (by a dealer), although I had to put a few £££ into it to get it up to scratch. But rumours are that prices for nice QPVs might finally be rising a little.

4.7 S cars advertised from mid 2020 to mid 2021 included the following prices and mileages:
  • £17,500 86,000
  • £15,995 62,000
  • £17,995 41,000
  • £15,995 85,000

I think you will get more noise by changing the exhaust system rather than remapping, but others are more expert than me.

Exactly what Matt has said.
Especially a thorough look around that subframe as underseal on rust not a good combination.
Good Luck.

i saw the pictures, the whole subframe had work completely striped, blown and re sealed. bill was around £1.2k but who am I to say it’s in good nik

yup, that’s the one! Stunning colour combo but the condition is questionable the leather on the drivers side door pocket was peeling a little

All the alloys were in bad condition the engine sounded ok I took a video which I can post for you guys to listen

the seller was bragging on how this car belonged to ex F1 virgin boss Graham Loewdon!

it’s done 61k miles 4 previous owners “trader”told me it had 3 but did HPi check and it was 4 plus “trader” has has been driving it for a year so really in my view that’s 5 previous owners

For the price it isn’t bad but as I’ve read on here Definitely worth a ppi
