Attention all QPV connoisseurs Advice needed. About to pull trigger on QPV 4.2

If the ten grand extra is "no issue" then carry on looking. FWIW my 4.2 QP has been in the family for 7 years and only ever "think I need more" after meeting up with folks from here.

The QPV is at the stage where you buy on in condition NOT spec. Something like a 911 circa year 2000 (Advice from Henry at 911virgin).

As clearly advised by Matt (conaero) do get PPI unless you have good mechanical skills. No amount of underseal can insulate buyer from £5000 worth of replace/repair.
Welcome!

who do you recommend for PPI rac/aa?

or are there Maserati specialists who offer this service?

The 4.7 S at £24k (X99DLH) has been on sale at the same dealer for ages; I think the owners use it. In Aug 2018 it was £28k at 48,616 and in Apr 2021 it was £23k at 54,166 and has only done 55 miles since then. But is a 2011 car. I would say overpriced by about £5k.

The Bianco Fuji one is wildly over-priced for high-ish miles 2009 car.

There’s hardly any good examples on the market
Don’t like the grey 4.7 and the white does look good maybe not for the UK but the seller is smoking dried bananas at that price!!!

Problem with me is i can be impulsive when I buy , so last thing I want is I buy the 4.2 but deep down will I kick myself for not getting the 4.7

Maybe it’s best I test drive a 4.7 to compare then if I really like the 4.7 be patient for a good example to come on the market

Just out of interest apart from the obvious car sale websites what other sites do you recommend I keep my eyes peeled on?

I’m aware there are some auction sites that from time to time have some decent examples

....

I very impulsively bought my 4.2 QPV in 2016. I have had no fundamental regrets, but I really should have been a bit more careful, including getting a PPI by a specialist, and making sure the dealer fixed everything before I took delivery of the car.

I upgraded to the 4.7 S not because the 4.2 was unsatisfying, but just because I had a bit of cash and was ready to do something, but there is no better car than a QPV. It took me about 6 months of looking to pull the trigger, and even then it was not my absolutely ideal green/avorio 2011 30,000-mile car. But I'm very happy with the outcome (after some additional work).

I would definitely recommend driving several cars, including a 4.7 S and maybe even a GT S, to get a feel for what you want/need.

Autotrader is probably best.
Plus:
Hobbs Parker - you might see my old car VX09FLD come up.
Collectingcars.com (expensive)

Get a specialist inspection.
Check the variator situation
Look in the boot under the spare wheel tray (you will need to remove 8 bolts) for water leaks.
Avoid the full Bose (with the extra knobs either side of the screen, rather than just the Bose speakers) if you ever want Matt's Android / Apple audio upgrade.
Get a car with a CD changer (under the steering wheel) if you ever want the audio Loudlink upgrade.
Be suspicious of cars with no badges or bad badges on the C pillars, which suggests a respray.
They don't all have heated seats but these are easy to retrofit (and you end up with better switches).
Avoid TPMS which is a PITA.

Yeah that’s it, take it that’s common then?

Very common. All the trim has been, er, trimmed back to the last mm, so tends to come unstuck or wear out.

Door pillar coverings, and the areas marked in the pic are particularly vulnerable, but look ok on the one you are thinking of.

94810

What would that set me back to reupholster?

Gluing back that little bit of trim in the driver's pocket? £20
Reupholstering the whole car in ostrich hide: £45,000
;)

bear in mind that "everything is expensive on a maserati" - according to that bloke down the pub. At the end of the day specialists can do any task on this car for a fair price. It does need a proper specialist to avoid wasting money on repeat visits. Often an expert will fix first time in an hour of labour, where you can pay some non-expert to 'learn how too do it'.

The sub-frame is lining unto be the QP V killer. Show the images of repair to a specialist, let them decide if it was done as "forever repair" or until next MOT. My own car needed subframe removal to make properly good so is now a keeper.

As ^^above a trimmer will fix door panel for tens of pounds. More typical is driver side bolster needing resurface so maybe £100-250?

When these were new I drove back to back three QPV 4.2 trim levels
standard 4.2 Duo Select (F1 transmission) transaxle
4.2 Sport GT Duo Select (F1 transmission) transaxle
4.2 Sport GTS. ZF full auto (bolted to engine)

I preferred the GTS , purely because of the suspension (non-skyhook). The QP after 2007? ditched F1 system in favour of ZF. I prefer the 6 speed manual Duo Select. My next car will therefore need to be GranTurismo 4.7 MC-Shift to keep the gearbox.

Go with an independent specialist several around the UK.
As Phil said, once you locate a suitable car then engage the nearest specialist. That blue car does look nice in the pictures and Herts is within distance of many specialists.

Good point about trying out Skyhook. Some people hate it some people love it. My 4.2 was non-skyhook (which people tell me is rare, I think). My 4.7 S is Skyhook and it took a little getting used to - at first I found it stiff on Sport and wallowy on non-Sport, now I tell myself it is firm on Sport and swoopy on non-Sport. I found the GT S (not 'GTS', dammit) very firm and much more powerful than I could possibly need. YMMV. Tyres also make a big difference.

Oh, and you should only buy one with red brake callipers. Or get them re-painted to red immediately. :D

yup, that’s the one! Stunning colour combo but the condition is questionable the leather on the drivers side door pocket was peeling a little

All the alloys were in bad condition the engine sounded ok I took a video which I can post for you guys to listen

the seller was bragging on how this car belonged to ex F1 virgin boss Graham Loewdon!

it’s done 61k miles 4 previous owners “trader”told me it had 3 but did HPi check and it was 4 plus “trader” has has been driving it for a year so really in my view that’s 5 previous owners

For the price it isn’t bad but as I’ve read on here Definitely worth a ppi

I thought it might be, it's one I've got my eye on too (amongst other non Masers) - small world isn't it?

Is the body / paintwork ok? I hope the front the subframe isn't rusty and it appears to be one that doesn't need the variators sorting. It would be great if you could post the video you mentioned ;)

Best of luck, keep us posted on what happens.

I just can’t see how the extra 500c on the 4.7 makes a difference but like you say test drive both! Impulsive and impatient is my problem!

i do love your QPV thise red callipers make such a difference !

i see you desire a 2011 model, we’re they made much better than the older variants?

Paintwork looked ok, interior needs a good detailing

smelt a bit damp inside, the engine bay looked Okish a bit rusty I’ll try and get the video up

It’s a lovely colour combo but not sure it’s worth what he wants 15.5k

Water and Massers do not mix so if it smells damp it likely has some issue somewhere either blocked drains, leaking seals and front and rear windows if they have been replaced badly. Also when the vinyl starts to peel it can be difficult to fix invisibly as it will have no backing and if pulled too much, it stretches and tears. It would be OK around the door pocket but in more visible areas could be an issue.
