Brake recipe?

I've got a new recipe.

Take one Landrover Dicovery drive very fast along some crappy country single track roads. When your front disc's are Glowing red hot take a discarded walkers chrisp packet and rub it on the disc (Childish curiosity) until it 1, catches fire and 2, melts allover the caliper and fuses the pads to both caliper & disc..

I know I'm no gordon Ramsey but the language I used was his.

Some times I question how stupid I could be if I got up early and practised. I now know, no matter how early I'll never get any more stupid than I am already.

been looking round, seems that brembos seem to have the pin that needs to be knocked out with a punch, but wanted some piece of mind :)

Just punch one pin out, but watch out as the plate will ping. Then punch out the other. Punch one in once done, position the plate press it back, locate the second pin and then punch it home.

thanks, figured it out in the end, popped out quite easily, next issue is getting the **** pads to fit into the callipers. One pad goes in easily, but the other is proving to be a real bit$h to get up close to the edge. Think its time to get the file out, its just catching top and bottom, and i need all the space i can get for those new discs.

Hi Steve, Yes, they're a pain. Filing the new pads is standard.

I found it easier to undo the two bolts that hold the calipers in place, lift off the calipers with pads still in, remove the old pads , which are sometimes very tightly fitted, (more room to manouvre with the calipers removed) file down the new pads - a belt sander is perfect for this, copper grease, position, re-afix calipers, re-afix spring plate and pins.

Cheers, Miles.

luckily I dont need the car tomorrow, its taken me most of the day to get all the bolts loosen etc, although an expert now at dismantling, and putting back together, however did disconnect one of the callipers to take a closer look this evening so will need to bleed the system tomorrow

I know what you mean P, bizarre isn't it... basic engineering......measure the gap, make a pad that fits said gap..... but no.....27 layers of paint on a backing plate that's 2mm too big...... and on a caliper that needs to stop 400 horses!!

....well actually it was the metal edge......suppose they may have to allow for slight differences as time goes by, and allow a more tailored "fit"....sorta?...unlike the real McCoy......at £430 more pounds....;).....;)

My front discs were on new 11k miles ago, but became warped....lived with them for 6 mths...rears discs had been re-skimmed at the same time...all new now.....brilliant!!!!!!!!!
